Grit- Book Review The uncertainty of the world is what makes it the breeding ground for scientific exploration and discovery. There a multitudes of questions, left unanswered, whether it be the creation of the universe, or the complex in workings known as the human brain. One of these great anomalies is the question, how do people become successful? There are numerous ways in which one might answer such a question, from personal belief to scientific research. The key question, what is grit? Grit is not only the effort you put in, but the passion for that activity, and the perseverance to power through even when it gets tough. This is the idea that Duckworth presents within her novel. To further clarify, the passion a person must have for an activity or subject may not be immediately discover, not an “aha!” moment per say, but can be developed over time. These ranged from the top students of West Point Academy, all the way to the general American people. To show the amount of Grit a person possesses, Duckworth created the “Grit Scale”, a series of ten questions with five relating to passion and the over five relating to perseverance. The surveyee answers these ten questions on a one to five scale of how much the trait described represents them. After a small calculation, the resulting number, one through five (five being highest), is the person Grit Score. Duckworth further explains the real life application of this number, if a person possesses a high amount of Grit, they are more than likely going to succeed in the attempt of attain their life goals, conversely, those with lower Grit will have to learn how to develop it in order to succeed. In support of her claim, Duckworth uses examples of Grit, from a famous athlete, to the creator of Amazon.
