Final Paper The characters in Othello all have characteristic that make them very unique. While they are unique, they all either display grit and/or show one of the two basic mindsets being the growth and fixed mindset. I define grit as the stick-to-it attitude that takes the average to the elite level. Angela Duckworth, the author of “Angela Duckworth and the Research on ‘Grit’, defines grit as “sticking with things over the long term until you master them”(Duckworth 15) and also goes on to say that a gritty individual’s advantage is their stamina. I also feel that gritty people

Desdemona’s motivation is her love for Othello which is shown when she makes the sacrifice of not letting her father know that Othello and her are getting eloped. Though there were rumors and accusations of her loyalty to Othello, Desdemona did not commit any form of adultery. After Othello’s motivation and goal changed, Desdemona’s goals changed. Still motivated by her love for Othello, Desdemona then makes her attempts to prove her innocence to Othello. Desdemona takes on this goal from the point when she found out how he felt about the rumor and stuck with it to the very end showing signs of her grit. Desdemona’s willingness to help repair her relationship with Othello also shows a little bit of a growth mindset since she believed that with her efforts Othello would believe her and his hate would go away. Desdemona also had an influence on Emilia who then also tried to make Othello realize that his wife did nothing wrong. Emilia and Desdemona have a conversation in Act 4 Scene 3. Iago had many reasons but first he said that he deserved lieutenant over Othello and even more over than Cassio at the time due to his experience which was more than what Cassio had and also said “I hate the Moor and it is thought abroad, that ’twixt my sheets, ‘Has done my office. This quote and the job of being lieutenant shows that Iago has many motives to why he doesn’t like Othello this one being that he thinks Othello is messing around with his wife. This is shown since he got even more determined since knowing that he lost that lieutenant position the “lowly moor” which was Othello. Iago’s determination also speaks to the grit of his character. Although he’s motivated by the wrong reasons, Iago put in some incredible effort into the making and the carrying out of the plan which is something only people with strong motivation and true grit would

A telltale sign of a good story is when one can identify and relate with the characters. Shakespeare is known as one of the absolute best at creating flawed characters that are still worth caring for. It’s difficult to connect with real people and fictional characters alike when they present themselves as flawless, because human beings aren’t perfect and they relate and bond over these imperfections. One of Shakespeare’s greatest yet most troubled characters is Othello; a courageous man, blind to his own detriments, who that has worked for everything he has despite imposing circumstances. Othello is an extremely complex individual whose personality traits coincide remarkably well with those of world-renowned rapper and fashion designer Kanye…

He allowed himself to be tricked by Iago, and his inability to differentiate lies regarding Desdemona and Desdemona’s true actions causes him to think the worst of her. Desdemona is painted in a bad light due to the actions of the men around her. Desdemona is seen by Othello as a whore and unfaithful person due to words and accusations against her, none of which reflected her true character. The men in her life are allowed to dictate her character because people will believe what is said about her based on who they find most influential, and that would be everyone except Desdemona. Desdemona is just seen as a mere housewife, and not only that, but the housewife to a moor that she wasn't married to contrary to the will of her father.…

Iago is someone who is evil in a way that he can manipulate people into getting what he wants. It is without a doubt that the villain in the play “Othello” by William Shakespeare is Iago. Throughout the play, it is unclear as to why Iago does the evil things he does or what his end game for doing these things are. Much like the iconic character The Joker, from the famous movie “Batman: The Dark Knight.” Both of these villains have something in common.…

In Othello, William Shakespeare uses Iago’s manipulation of Othello as an example of what Machiavellian villains do to their victims. Iago is a classic example of a Machiavellian villain, as he continues to manipulate Othello and turn him against his friends. Ultimately Iago is able to turn him against his wife, at which point Othello turns on himself by committing suicide. As presented in Othello, Machiavellian villains are a far more dangerous foe than someone who uses physical violence because they are able to destroy the lives of multiple people simultaneously and turn their victims against themselves.…

Someone on a given day is not the person they were the day before, and that couldn’t be any more true in William Shakespeare’s Othello. Among his most well-known pieces, it is a brief, fictional account of the last days of an unfortunate Venetian Moor, Othello. Essentially, the tale of a man with no other option but to wade through instances of betrayal by his closest associates, death, discrimination and just about any other scandalous situation that could come his way.…
