The appellants went to trial in the Circuit Court for the sixth circuit in New Haven and were found guilty; they then went forward to appeal the decision. The Appellate Division of the Circuit court affirmed the decision and so did the Supreme Court of Errors of Connecticut. The appellants appealed to the Supreme Court, the judges’ noted probable jurisdiction.

Whether Connecticut’s §§53-32 was constitutional and thus whether the appellants could be prosecuted under and 54-196. The court had to decided whether it was constitutional for a state to criminalize a married couple’s use of contraceptives.

Both judge Black and Stewart dissented. They didn’t agree with the other judge’s view on the amendments that were proposed to have deemed this law unconstitutional. They did not agree that the constitution provided “a general right of privacy” (Stewart).
H) Why is this case important for health care administrators?
This decision allowed medical providers to be able to give their married patients contraceptives without legal repercussions as faced by Dr. Buxton. Thus health care administrators had more opportunities to meet their patient’s needs. Health care administrator would be able to implement more family planning options.
