One would have no idea while watching the modern day Disney versions of Cinderella, that this tale was once horrific in nature. Other Disney tales with this type of dark past include: “Snow White,” “Rapunzel,” and “Sleeping Beauty.” The Disney Corporation has been able to profit from the rewriting of classic folktales and turning them into what you see today, as the modified and child friendly versions, of the original stories that would have focused originally on darker meanings. The reason for the gruesome backgrounds comes from the origins of these tales. The Grimm tales come originally from old German Folk Legends. The legends had been passed down orally from generation to generation. The Grimm Brothers’ were able to obtain these tales by inviting storytellers to their home, in Germany, and conducting interviews. The Grimm Brothers’ are credited with saving fairytales, because of gaining this knowledge about these timeless tales. The legends themselves were originally used for bedtime stories and to scare children to act right. The stories that were told then are extremely different to the versions the Grimm Brothers’ let out. The Grimm Brothers’ took the legends that they found and added their own spiritual aspects to it. In Germany, the tales are based from national culture and the Grimm Brothers’ added their own twist to make them more interesting. It is said that, “ German folklore is grounded in the national

“The Story of the Grandmother” is a fascinating fairy tale that many people are not exposed to while growing up. This tale predates, and is likely the basis of, Perrault’s “Little Red Riding Hood”. There are multitudes of versions of “Little Red Riding Hood”, each with slight variations. “The Story of the Grandmother” is unique in the fact that it is the possibly the oldest written version, allowing the reader a glimpse at this famous tale’s origin. Fairy tales originally were used as a means to pass the time for adults doing tedious manual labor all day long.…

The Brother Grimm’s version of Cinderella has hidden meanings in the stories that teach us about how the story resembles or symbolize our society. The first symbol in the story that stood out to me the most is the stepsisters representing society 's cruelness and greed. The second symbol was the stepmother’s envy of Cinderella 's beauty, because Cinderella was more beautiful than her daughter 's. The stepmother thought that her daughter’s were not as beautiful as Cinderella and as a result she was envious of Cinderella, this represent a society dominated by envy and hate. The third symbol is the hazel tree that provided Cinderella with the wisdom and inspiration to overcome the abuse she was going through, this represents how society rewards…

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm was popularly known as the “Grimms Brothers”, were characterized as one of the most dramatic writers in the 19th century. They were categorized by their short, simple sentences, colloquial language, and their well-organized approach to craft writings. Their writing was entitled Little Snow White, it was released in 1937 and it was about Snow White, a princess who falls into a deep, death-like rest after taking a bite from a poisoned apple. My impression about this narrative was an innocent little girl who had her step-mother hating her because of her beauty and kind-heart. The Little Snow-White by the Grimms Brothers is a fairy tale that reveals the goodness and the beauty of a little princess who is loved by all, however,…

Perrault version of Cinderella Vs the Grimm brothers’ version of Cinderella. “Fairy tale” is the term also used to describe something containing unusual happiness, like “fairy tale ending” a happing ending, or “fairy tale romance”, though not all fairy tales have a happy ending. According to Arthur Schlesinger, classical tales “tell children what they unconsciously know-that human nature is not innately good, that conflict is real, that life is harsh before it is, happy-and thereby reassure them about their own fears and their own sense of self” (229). Despite the fact that both Perrault and the Grimm brothers versions of Cinderella are fundamentally similar to each other, but the differences between them show two different moral universes.…

After reading the Grimms’ brothers Cinderella, it is clear to me why fairytales were not written for children audiences. The part where the sisters cut off their feet to fit into the shoe was surprised me as I am used to the Disney version of Cinderella. I do like how all of the Grimm’s fairytales have been adapted into movies and other version by various authors and directors. I believe that it is amazing that a person can take someone else’s idea and create a whole other story that provides a different feel yet, keeps the most important themes and problems. The Grimms’ brothers are so very talented through their stories and have such an imagination.…

Charles Perrault’s “Little Red Riding Hood” and Brothers Grimm’s “Hansel and Gretel” are two well-known fairytales in today’s society. Both tales incorporate the key literary elements that define a typical fairy tale. The significance in these specific elements comes from the effect they have on the plot and the consequential moral of the tale. Although “Little Red Riding Hood and “Hansel and Gretel” are two texts with distinct differences regarding their plots, the characters, setting, and themes incorporated into both respective tales relate closely to each other. These similarities largely identify the shared intention of the fairy tale authors for creating their individual tale and the significance of the certain themes and morals that…

Introduction While it is noted that original fairytales tend to be darker and more frightening than recreated versions of the tales, there is a strikingly similar amount of violence and unhappiness within Hans Christian Anderson’s fairytale “The Little Mermaid” and Disney’s reimagining of the same story. At the same time, both fairytales and their reimagining’s are supposed to have a clear message, usually regarding some kind of moral value. Unlike the similar happenings of violence in the two versions of “The Little Mermaid” we are discussing, the morals of the two stories are vastly different. In this paper, I will be examining the similarities and differences regarding the violence, morality, and endings of H.C. Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid”…

Schneewittchen by the Brothers Grimm is a folktale that can be perceived in many different ways. Olrik’s Laws allow for a perspective of study that, through analysis, allows for an organic, cultural conception of Schneewittchen. Identifying each of Olrik’s Epic Laws that are evident in Schneewittchen, translated to Snow-White, successfully allows for a deeper understanding of the structural approach as well as the tale. The first law of Olrik’s Epic Laws is the Law of Opening and Closing, which states that a folk tale does not begin with a sudden action or ending.…
