While hitchhiking, Griffin has a pleasant experience with a friendly white construction worker who offers him a ride. Griffin thinks the man must be color blind since he appeared to be unaware that he was black. Since there is no place that will serve black men, the man offers to buy him a hamburger and he lets Griffin eat it in the car. To Griffin, this construction worker is proof that goodness can exist in a world filled with racism and hatred.

Black and white people still have a tendency to live in segregated areas. There are still ghettos in lower class neighborhoods. White supremacy, prejudice and discrimination still exist. Black people are still generally to be less educated, have fewer high school graduates, and have higher unemployment rates. Personally, I do not think I would have the courage to do what John Griffin did. For me, changing my skin color and basically my entire culture is a frightening endeavor. I would however consider taking part in a study or experiment based on gender or social class. I believe it would be enlightening to see how things would turn out if I were to say, pretend to be in a lower social class. Equally enlightening would be a gender based experiment to see how men and women are treated
