Life is molded by the fruits of mutations. It was this revelation that fueled my desire to delve into the world of cells and directed my fascination towards the objective details governing the universe. My will to challenge the known while embracing an open reception to knowledge is what distinguishes me as a worthy GRFAW candidate.

Currently in the 11th grade, my previous grade 10 year resulted an overall average of 93% and final marks of 100% in science and 98% in math. My passion for science resembles the irresistible gravitational effects of an ever-expanding black hole, drawn to the comfort of seeking order in chaos. I have demonstrated this aspiration through avid class participation and by seeking out scientific opportunities such as HOSA, a competitive program teaching knowledge and skills in medical sciences. Most importantly, I actively pursue scientific collaboration with others at school, and understand the academic benefit of having multiple perspectives.

When pondering the phenomena of life, it is my innate sense of curiosity that seeks out new mysteries. My love of learning inspires me to connect my growing knowledge to revolutionary ideas, such as biotechnological advancements.

Through multiple volunteer shifts at the Credit Valley Hospital in the cardiovascular and medicine departments, I have grown significantly from the challenges faced in the stressful environment, the biggest lesson being efficient self-reliance in unpredictable situations. I also contribute in the annual planning of an environmental-awareness event called BogFest where I advocate for lesser-acknowledged issues. The extracurriculars I participate in include HOSA as a member in the biomedical laboratory science cluster, Science Club as a general member, French Club as an executive member and band as a bassist. My extracurricular involvement demonstrates my enthusiasm for learning and

As I careened along the course for my first ever practice, I was struck with how unusual it was for me to do something so daring. Usually very cautious, I had only been asked to join Buggy a week prior, and there I was, lying only a few inches off of the ground in a motorless buggy, with my hands in front of me to steer. Peering through the windshield with an assortment of protective gear, I watched the track zoom by at 25 miles per hour. Buggy is a sport unique to Carnegie Mellon University, where students from all majors join to build and compete buggies. Looking back, there are many parallels between my experience with the sport, and the development of my career aspirations.…

Furthermore, as a leader, I stepped up to the plate and created my own program called “Heart Camp Survivor” that ran the whole week. Running this project allowed me to work with many doctors and nurses side-by-side whom I had never noticed attended camp before. In addition, as I was working with the staff, I learned many things about hospital careers that I never knew before. The wisdom I gained from the employees of Dr. Bill Neches Heart Camp for Kids about nursing highly influenced my decision to study the field in…

Leadership is imperative to supporting the foundation of succession in our society. It is important that we exercise our God given right to utilize our sphere of influence to the best of our abilities. Although leadership may gain you more recognition throughout society it is not about the affluence one can acquire; leading is solely about guiding others down a path of success so that future generations can more easily learn from our mistakes to pass down to the next generation. That is why I believe mentoring and any position of leadership should be central to young adults to set the example for the impactful youth. I found my sphere of influence to be within the academic driven chapter of the National Honor Society which in my senior year I was elected president.…

“Thank you.” This was the simple yet meaningful response a patient’s husband gave to the emergency physician as I observed from the corner of the room. It was determined through a plethora of laboratory studies and clinical intuition that the patient was suffering from hepatorenal syndrome, secondary to her battle with metastatic colorectal cancer that spread to her liver. Her husband knew the prognosis, but this time she would be unable to recover. Despite the manic pace of the emergency department, Dr. Gregg took time to carefully explain the patient’s situation.…

Visualize the sensation of your heart racing as you speed down the steep curve of a roller coaster. Imagine that warm fuzzy feeling generated by thinking about someone or something you love. The combination of adrenaline, and that expanding feeling in the tummy, is what I experience when I look up at the clear night sky; a paradox of unity and loneliness. My favorite example of this sensation is one of the many mystifying, alluring pictures of our universe taken by the Hubble telescope. Though an inevitable sense of charm is often the desired outcome of viewing these images, there are some that capture space's vast expanse instead.…

The ability to use information to solve problems has been my passion ever since I started playing with Origami. At the age of four, I would sit for hours looking at picture books and watching videos on how to create moving shapes and structures. I have always taken an interest in science, which led me to be part of the medical academy in high school, one of four speciality programs offered where students could pursue a major interest before college. I attended the medical academy, where I took courses in anatomy and physiology, health and emergency response because as I thought one day I would study biology. I enjoyed learning various medical topics, but I did not envision myself becoming a doctor.…

"There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure." -- Colin Powell, our iconic leader and former secretary of state quoted very true statement. In fact, behind every success, there is no any secret connection that helps a person to get ahead, but it is a cumulative effort of many things; motivation, exertion, passion, and desire to achieve it. People saw me as the skinny girl who did not have to worry about what she ate; what they failed to notice was that food did not appeal to me, and I had a difficult time consuming it. Having lost all color in my skin, I was given a new nickname: Snow White. What they did not know about this Snow White was that she did not eat apples.…

As community service is a theme that is encouraged by St. Francis, I see that it is fitting, that I too am passionate about such an activity. During the course of the summer, I devoted much of my free time to volunteering at the East Valley Family YMCA. Through volunteering for 5 days a week and about 4 hours a day, I gained a few traits that will help me uphold St. Francis’s tradition and reputation of the community’s pride and excellence. By dictionary definition, the phrase “work ethic” is a value based on hard work and diligence.…
