That kind of memory where I recollect my life experiences would be an example of autobiographical memory. Or when I think of the day my niece was born and how I can remember being in the waiting room for hours sitting in an uncomfortable chair, watching some boring golf tournament, surrounded by the hospital smell. That's being able to recall events more accurately and with vivid imagery than just everyday events, an example of emotional/flashback memory. I haven't had experience with any traumatic events but I know that many veterans have. …show more content…

In the show "Grey's Anatomy" the main character's cold-hearted mother and traumatic childhood played a role in causing a few of her memories to be repressed. The process of "motivated forgetting" might also occur when trying to recollect a memory that is painful or anxiety-laden. There are times when retrieving a repressed memory because it contains important information is necessary. Most likely an eyewitness testimony during some sort of police investigation. An eyewitness report is vital because they are able to report what they possibly saw or heard regarding the crime. These types process all come back to the same thing and that is memory retrieval. “When it seems like the night will last forever, and there’s nothing left to do but count the years…” (Garcia). The Grateful Dead, in their song “Black Muddy River,” unwittingly describe the life of the person afflicted with amnesia. The difference between the amnesia laden life and “Black Muddy River” is that amnesiacs do not know they have missed years to count. Amnesia, a memory disorder that prevents the encoding or retrieval of new (anterograde amnesia) or old memories (retrograde amnesia) effects only a very small percentage of the world population, but severely decreases the quality of life (“Amnesia”, “Mayo Clinic”).…

The process of consciously or unconsciously blocking or burying memories is called repressing memories. Victims of sexual abuse are a case of when repressed memory is very common and around one third of sexually abused people don’t remember a large part of what they experienced. Naturally, people don’t want to remember the stressful and traumatic memories of sexual abuse so they repress them. To begin, I do not believe that repressed memories should be allowed for use in court to prosecute the alleged abuser. After reading the article by Elizabeth Loftus, I came to this conclusion because memories have the ability to be manipulated and abused, which studies and analysis's have proven. For example, some professionals contain the ability to provide false memories in which the manipulated person never experienced. The court system could be working with material that has no substantial value what so ever for the prosecution of the abuser. Therefore, I strongly believe the gathered resources to prosecute someone should be accountable or proven information instead of just memories.…

I have been watching “Greys Anatomy” since I can remember, and I have seen each and every episode of every season. “Greys Anatomy” has affected my life because it has taught me how to handle hard situations, taught me about love and also has taught me about friendship. Taking all these factors into consideration leads to the point that memory is only to some extent reliable.
