The artist uses complementary colors that tug equally at the eye. She uses a dynamic contrast of red and green to two of the shapes. Due to this, the artist keeps the viewers eyes from resting on one area of the composition for far too long. In this painting, Dorothea uses value contrast to show the differences in dark and light. While some tones appear lighter due to the artist adding white as if illuminated, other tones are darkened as if to suggest that a light has caused the shapes to have created shadows.…

Another example is the use of implied lines that lead to the focal point. The focal point/emphasis is also another principle of design that brings harmony to the image. Michelangelo’s pieta has been researched comprehensively on different subjects ranging from why he signed this piece only, about the missing leg of Christ, and the draping wet-cloth look on the drapes of Christ and Mary. However, the most important question that has been researched is to figure out why this piece is the best piece he has carved compared to his other works as well as other art pieces done by different sculptors. Scholars such as Joanna E. Ziegler wrote that “Michelangelo radically redefined the enterprise of making pieta sculptures and, hence, redefined the nature of the “art” itself (Ziegler).” He did so by contrast with the Flemish works: Michelangelo’s core figures are inviolable (due to the change material from wood to marble)…

For this essay, the artwork chosen is titled Untitled, (I Shop Therefore I Am) by Barbara Kruger. This artwork was created in 1987 using the medium of film in order to capture the image. The subject for this artwork would be issue oriented based on the message displayed. This piece would also be considered to be abstract due to the message that is displayed in the photograph and how it makes itself look different. The artwork itself is what looks to be a reused photo for a previous advertisement many years ago, but the artist used a powerful message to cover up what was being advertised, and used the words “I shop therefore I am” in a giant red textbox with white lettering that is very clear to read when viewing the art up close.…

“The Scream” I really like this painting because somehow it involves mystery and insecurity and to my eyes, the rare views in it reflect a sense of how deep the feelings and thoughts of a person can be. In addition, the fact that the composition does not allow viewers to appreciate the face of the screaming person, is what has drawn me to it. Even though it seems to be that it was a lovely afternoon for everyone, it seems that it was not for the scared looking person. Although two boats are seen on the lake and two people walking very pleasingly behind, the scared looking person seems to be astonished and perhaps confused toward something. Hence, looking at this mysterious individual posing his hands on his face with his mouth open has given me the impression that he or she is appreciating something non real that no one else is able to notice; no one but him.…
