Gretel: A Fictional Narrative

When she caught her breath again, she trekked cautiously as she did not want the man to find her. When she was deep in the forest she took a break, as she thought she was safe. Many hours of walking had worn her out, so she decided to take a nap. What she did not know was that the ‘man’ was a wolf and had followed her scent. The wolf hid behind a tree, thinking of all the possible ways to kill her.

When Gretel finally awoke from the rustling sounds of leaves against the forest ground, the wolf greeted her, “Well. Well. Good evening, Gretel. Lost in the forest, are you? Or perhaps were you running away from me?”

Gretel, afraid and confused replied, “Who are you? What do you know of me?”

The wolf laughed and remarked, “Oh Gretel. You poor, poor child. How could you not tell I was the one hospitalising you at the candy house?”

She would hurl the last pebble from her pocket at one of the wolf’s eye and run back ‘home’ to her parents as the path the wolf was running to was close to her house. She would then grab the rope that was lying outside from the broken swing and strangle the wolf. What worried her was that she was shorter than the wolf and would find it difficult to swing the rope directly around his neck. She prayed to God she would succeed in this plan. She waited for the perfect timing and with all her might, thrust the pebble into the wolf’s right eye. Thankfully she succeeded and the wolf’s grip on her loosened just enough for her to escape. She picked up her speed and hastened her way home. She was almost there when the wolf was suddenly only ten metres away from her. She seized the rope, wrapped it into coils on her arm and when the wolf was a metre away from her, she aimed and cast the rope at his neck. It wrapped around his neck nicely, how Gretel wanted it and pulled hard until her hands ached. She called out to her parents, repeatedly yelling, “Papa, mother! There’s a wolf out her trying to eat me. Please help

Reflecting on the college application process, I noticed that the college essays were stressed very highly, but all the prompts ask for the same thing. Whether they are asking for an eventful moment, your passion, a hobby, or a chosen outsourced prompt, many students seem to convey the same messages in their essays. To get around this, one must ask a more inconspicuous prompt where the student’s character shows through their unique ideas. A prompt that is universal, conveys a meaning, and is always answered uniquely must ask for a narrative: Write a creative story. Walking through the woods one night, Agatha Johansson could not wait to arrive at her friend’s house.…

The second “wolf” in this story is drastically subtler than the outwardly terrifying worm creature, this wolf is less physical and more conceptual. This ferocious and terrifying “wolf” is the universally known terrible feeling that we call grief. Grief is defined as “keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharp sorrow; painful regret.” This definition fits perfectly with the story presented in Emily Carroll’s “Through the Woods” in the short story “The Nesting Place”. Our dreary yet relatable main character Mabel, or Bel, is not only haunted by the monster in this story; she is also haunted by the grief that comes with the loss of her mother.…

Charles Perrault’s “Little Red Riding Hood” and Brothers Grimm’s “Hansel and Gretel” are two well-known fairytales in today’s society. Both tales incorporate the key literary elements that define a typical fairy tale. The significance in these specific elements comes from the effect they have on the plot and the consequential moral of the tale. Although “Little Red Riding Hood and “Hansel and Gretel” are two texts with distinct differences regarding their plots, the characters, setting, and themes incorporated into both respective tales relate closely to each other. These similarities largely identify the shared intention of the fairy tale authors for creating their individual tale and the significance of the certain themes and morals that…

The fairy tales use various means to get their points across, but each one has a theme that the child is expected to understand. In the case of Little Red Riding Hood, the characters and their interactions are used to share the moral. However, the supposed moral is conflicted when the reader takes a deeper look into the seemingly simple tale. Little Red Riding Hood symbolizes innocence and being naive while the wolf is evil.…
