The total estimated costs of the music festival are $6,427,783. Since some costs are fixed and other costs vary due to different pay structures, my calculations are based on the high fixed costs. So, the total costs may be higher or lower than estimated. The total cost of the bands is $6,335,000. I estimated the venue cost based on the higher costs to allow for enough funding if needed. The total cost of the venue is $25,000. Other costs estimated to be 67,783.

Jazz History Concert Report II For my final concert writing critique, I decided to attend the live Ball State Student Jazz Combos on Tuesday, November 8; this event took place in Choral Hall inside of the university’s Music Instruction Building. The wooden hall was smaller than I thought it would have been, but it gave the concert setting a more intimate feel. There were three groups presenting that day, each under a different director. Because each group did not have a specific name, I had to label them based on the order in which they performed.…

On Friday, July 10th, the local instrumental jazz group Yuma Jazz Company played at Lutes Casino for a couple of hours. The instrumentation was fairly standard for a jazz group, with trumpet, saxophone, guitar, double bass, and drums (I believe those were electric). The guitar and bass, along with the drums, served as a sort of basso continuo, generally backing the horns, but occasionally taking up the melody for themselves, resulting in a texture that was thinly polyphonic. Also noticeable was the “fabulous light up tip jar,” a colorful accompaniment to their music. The concert ran from 7 to 9 PM, so I went in not only with the intention of listening to the group but also with a good meal in mind.…

I attended Vento Sur’s concert at Glendale College on Oct. 3rd. Following the artist biographies, Vento Sur is a Calarts –All-Alumni group composed of Joao Junqueira, Julissa Bozman, Alex Bozman, and Jay Gravatt. They perform music in Spanish and Portuguese languages both. I saw many interesting instruments, and after other songs end the guitarist Joao Junqueira explained about the traditional instruments to audiences. First they performed Adentro Cojutepeque dance music from Mexico and violinist Julissa Bozman featured the song.…

As someone who is not originally from Texas there were many factors that went into my decision to attend the University of Houston-Downtown. I first heard about UHD from my sister who had nothing but good things to say about the university, then I was reigned in by Dr. Mari Nicholson of the university Honors Program. As the end of high school approached I knew that making the move from Louisiana to Texas to attend UHD would not be a mistake. Growing up I always looked up to the ambassadors at each level of education because to me they always represented the cream of the crop. If someone wanted to know something the ambassadors were the ones they went to.…

Every day, I try to listen to a new piece of music. Whether it be a string group, unaccompanied choir, or even a percussion consort, I believe that by doing this, so much can be learned from just listening. About the mid-month of July, I came across this piece of music. I thought it was extremely fun and quirky at the same time! I had continued to listen to it, read some background information on the piece, and do a small amount of study on the work.…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

1963 – 1973 A Decade of Disillusion The era that I chose to write about was from 1963 to 1973. I felt that this was the decisively time period in America history. The 60’s were ushered in riding on the coattails of the 1950’s and was felt would carry on the hopes and dreams of the post-WWII economic growth which America was enjoying . The 1950’s ideas of bliss in suburbia with dinner promptly at 6 and of a mother doing housework in pearls were about to be shattered by the events of the 1960’s.…
