In John Gardner's, Grendel, the protagonist, Grendel goes through major changes about the way he views life and the way he views himself. Of course there are times where he comes to conclusions on his own due to his isolation from the real world, but there are antagonists in the story that do impact Grendel’s image like his mother, the dragon, and beowulf. Grendel is an evil, selfish, pitiful, cynical monster. He tends to put himself on a higher pedestal than the the rest, but the reader puts Grendel on a lower pedestal than others because he thinks too highly of himself. When Grendel talks about his mom or cries for her help, the evil monster image goes away for a while; this is only a temporary change in Grendel’s attitude.…

Grendel is the first of three beasts that Beowulf is tasked with defeating in this epic. Grendel ensues immeasurable terror in the hearts of the Danes, but unlike many folkloric creatures, he has a human personality. While Grendel is by no means a dynamic character, he does have the motivation to wreak havoc upon Heorot Hall. He also has enough reason to define a cause for his aggression, and his tendency to be a pariah is clear since he and his mother are the only characters associated with Hell. The mention of Grendel being of "Cain's clan, whom the creator had outlawed and condemned as outcasts"(106-107) was likely shocking to Christian audiences, who knew Cain as a malignant soul from the Bible.…

Grendel, since he is a descendent of Cain, is one that is cursed by God himself, forced to wage “his lonely war, inflicting constant cruelties” on people (116: line:164-165). I would say that he is evil because of the hatred of his neighbors have made him bitter, but he is also evil because he is a demon. They call him a “fiend out of hell”, one that loves to work evil in the world (114: line 100). Even though he may be bitter because of the resentment, the fact that he is a demon that came out of hell makes him a monster, something that is evil from the roots of his origin. He is linked to the man Cain who was cursed by God himself for killing his own brother, an event that would conjure up significant resentment of the human race, part of…

Throughout the book Grendel personality changes and because of these three characters they were Beowulf, the Dragon, and his mother. Beowulf changed Grendel's personality because it had alert him that not all humans are weak and defenseless. He had realized that Beowulf was stronger than the rest of the humans he was unique. The Dragon had made Grendel question himself among the human beings, the dragon had already known why Grendel was there he was curious to ask him about the humans. The dragon had told him that the humans are nothing but trouble that he shouldn’t worry about them or go nowhere near them that they are just trouble and a waste of time.…

In other words, you are one of the people that I blame for Grendel’s death, no disrespect sir, but I digress. Grendel comes in the night when most of Beowulf’s men are asleep and he snatches up the first solider and rips him apart “Grendel snatched at the first Geat he came to, ripped him apart, cut his body to bits with his powerful jaws.” (Page 9, Lines 14-16). Beowulf let the first two Geats die. I will never understand this, and had Beowulf not done this; there is a small possibility that my Grendel would still be alive.…

Grendel’s self image all depends on His opinions of himself, comparisons, and opinions of other people. Three characters that change his opinion of himself are The Dragon Unferth, And His Mother. Grendel’s mother impacts Grendel’s personality because he wants to be different from her. Grendel’s mother cannot talk and is not free willed like grendel is and that seperates grendels personality apart from his mother’s. “I understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes and fears.…

Someones motive is what they base their decisions on. Motivation can push someone to do their best at whatever the motive is. In the poem, Beowulf, Beowulf seems to show his true motive throughout the novel. He starts off being heroic to save the people and soon turns to be for the fame and fortune. His motivation for his first battle to his last are complete opposite as evidence by him fighting Grendel to save the people of Herot, taking Grendel's head and mothers sword as trophies from battle, and fighting the dragon for the treasure he holds.…

He feels joy, but he also feels fear. Regardless of this, Grendel is anxious to finally kill Beowulf and show the Geats and the Danes how obnoxious and narcissistic he is. The men finally sleep in the hall and patiently await Grendel’s appearance. Once Grendel has noticed that they are all sound asleep, he enters the hall, with hesitation, and he eats one of the men. Upon doing so, Grendel feels powerful and decides to eat another man.…

Chrissy bradley I found this chapter to be a bit confusing, however after a brief discussion with one of my peers I made some connections. In the fourth chapter Grendel asked the sky why he can't have anyone to talk to and in chapter 5 he finds the dragon to talk. I think the dragon is a nihilist and he says he knows "the beginning, the present, the end . all time, all space." (62, 63).…

The two cultures I chose to compare heroic values for are the ancient stories of Gilgamesh and Beowulf. Although they possess many similar heroic characteristics they also differ greatly. Beowulf is often referred to as the first important work of literature in English, even though it was written in Old English. The world that Beowulf depicts and the heroic code of honor that defines much of the story is a relic of pre–Anglo-Saxon culture. The hero of The Epic of Gilgamesh was an actual historical figure, a king who reigned over the Sumerian city-state of Uruk around 2700 B.C.…

Grendel is an innately evil demonic beast and his birthright is to be scorned by man as Cain’s evil offspring. As a result of this ostracism, he takes out his fury on the men in Heorot, killing whomever he can as his own form of warped vengeance stemming from a feeling of isolation as a born outcast. Despite Grendel’s misfortunes, which may garner sympathy from some, his actions are not justified by the situation he is in and, even in a violent, revenge-based society, Grendel is still the heartless beast the Danes see him as and his fate was well deserved. When Grendel is first introduced, he is actually described in a slightly sympathetic light.…
