When Grendel states “poor Grendel’s had an accident….so may you all” this is meant to be a curse. This is a curse because after Grendel’s battle with Beowulf he is badly wounded and he knows that he is going to die and the animals that he has tormented gather around him to watch him die. This is when Grendel states “they watch on, evil, incredibly stupid, enjoying my destruction” (Gardner 174). This shows how mad Grendel is at the animals and that is why the quote is meant to be a curse. Secondly Grendel’s quote is meant to be a curse because Grendel states “they watch with mindless indifferent eyes as calm as midnight black as the chasm below me” (Gardner 173).…

Since the arrivals of the characters are pretty spread out between negative and positive, Grendel has his ups and downs. At the very beginning of the story, Grendel seems to be a decent character, and it does not seem like he is really out to get anyone. This is especially true when he is a child; he discusses the games he used to play when he was young. One of those games led to Grendel getting caught in the tree (Gardner 18). Then Hrothgar comes in, and the monster’s character somewhat devolves, because he begins to hate the king.…

Grendel is the first of three beasts that Beowulf is tasked with defeating in this epic. Grendel ensues immeasurable terror in the hearts of the Danes, but unlike many folkloric creatures, he has a human personality. While Grendel is by no means a dynamic character, he does have the motivation to wreak havoc upon Heorot Hall. He also has enough reason to define a cause for his aggression, and his tendency to be a pariah is clear since he and his mother are the only characters associated with Hell. The mention of Grendel being of "Cain's clan, whom the creator had outlawed and condemned as outcasts"(106-107) was likely shocking to Christian audiences, who knew Cain as a malignant soul from the Bible.…

From the bat Grendel is introduced as a ravenous individual “...conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain, murderous creatures banished by God...” (The Gawain Poet ll. 20-22). His origin early reveals that he spawned from a murderous and savage human being from the biblical story, Cain and Abel. That is to say this ensues that Grendel's blood is that of evil and as the epic barely starts Grendel demonstrates malice actions.…

Grendel is a beast like creature that is a tall, big, and has sharp claws that can rip through a piece of wood and later is invincible to weapons by the dragons’ enchantment. He has killed many people without a care to be given, “Afraid or not, I would go to the Meadhall, I knew (Gardner 158).” “The monster” wants only the people who has hurt him or put him through any pain to know what true fear is. He feels that he cannot show love to people he wants to but only fear. “If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear, and chiefly towards you my arch-enemy (Shelly…

An example of how Grendel exhibits evilness is when, “.../ The beginning might not be the end. And that night/ Grendel came again, so set/ On murder that no crime could ever be enough, / No savage assault quench his lust / For evil” (lines 40-53). This represents an evilness in Grendel, because one is able to see that in order or a monster to repeatedly kill and not feel bad at all, it must have a heart of evil.…

If Grendel escaped unharmed after the fight with Beowulf, he would have been ashamed and try to come back for vengeance. In the poem, Grendel goes back to his mother’s lair to seek her help in getting vengeance on King Hrothgar and Beowulf. If Grendel got his mom on his side, he would most likely be able to defeat Beowulf. Unfortunately, Grendel got his arm ripped off and he was embarrassed of his defeat. In the poem, it states, “When Grendel inhabited Herot, the hall his till his crimes pulled him into hell”…

Grendel is at first, a creature who empathizes for his pain. It causes the reader to question the good and evil; whether the men are the heroes and Grendel is the monster, or if Men are the true horrors. Grendel is just a poorly misunderstood character, but due to the way society treated him, he slowly grew into the monster known as the Wreaker of Meadhalls. One can see that in the beginning, Grendel is a pathetic creature just looking for someone to understand him and to talk to him. But the men do not give him any of that; they abuse and misjudge him.…
