The town once again turned to Beowulf as their hero. He could not refuse the fight, or his honor and courage would be questioned and ridiculed. He merely accepted the fact that he had to fight. Taking a group of followers, Beowulf went deep into the woods to the lair of Grendel’s mother. Her lair was underneath a swamp, so Beowulf had his followers wait above the water while he dove down to the bottom. This time, he did actually prepare for the battle, taking a sword with him. When he finally reached the lair, he was met with a fury that raged around. Grendel’s mother was not easily defeated. It only took one stroked for Beowulf's sword to be splintered and shattered. Her skin was so well protected that his sword broke under the strain of trying to pierce her skin. Beowulf looked around the lair frantically, desperate for another weapon. He had been given gifts to prepare for this battle, which he willingly took. He had prepared for this battle much more because he knew that it would be harder to defeat Grendel’s mother, than Grendel
