Culture has always been around and has evolved immensely over the years. “This can be seen through the ideas that our culture embodies today,” perhaps a better alternative due to the fact you no longer see people uptight or strict about certain values . An example of this would be how plays, films, and books all vary from one another in realism from what they used to believe back then, on the other hand effects have changed the view of the watcher due to the immense amount of money that has been put into it just to make it believable. Even though the film Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson 2005) was a low budget film, it depicted many cultural differences between the modern views of life and the views that were established when …show more content…
This being said the producer gave him more human characteristics rather than god like characteristics. Throughout the film you begin to pick out little things that catch your eye’s attention when it comes to him. Beowulf in the film was not depicted as a prideful Geat like in the epic, where all you heard were his great boasts. In the film son of Ecgtheow was more relaxed and humble especially when he spared Grendel’s son life. If it was the actual Beowulf that they had addressed in the epic that boy would have stood no chance. In the film there was no sign of Beowulf getting a reward as mentioned in the epic where he received land from Hrothgar as well as a sword when he chops off Grendel’s arm. In the final fight scene of the movie when Beowulf fights against Grendel’s mother the giant’s sword, used to slay giants, laid on a pile of loot instead of hanging off the wall. After he killed Grendel’s mother the epic described a melting sword, which the film did not capture. The most likely reason for this would be due to the fact that they were trying to make the film look realistic by leaving out the reason why the sword melts when Grendel’s mother’s blood is left on the blade. One of the major differences in both the epic and the film was the way Beowulf valued religion. The Geats relied on the faith of God to help …show more content…
The reason Grendel attacks the mead hall resulted from when he was a child. Hrothgar went after his father, having him killed for taking a piece of fish which represents how much greed and selfishness has grown in our world. Due to this Grendel’s father plays a major part in this film due to the fact that if this never happened everything would have been different ,and Beowulf would have never gone to Daneland to kill him. Nowhere in the epic does it mention Grendel’s father whatsoever. Instead they say Grendel came from the spawn of Cain, when Cain slew Abel and was banished from the garden. In the film, a chain of reaction occurred and many other characters had an effect on what was to come. This being said, the witch, Selma who was kicked out of her home due to being falsely accused of murder, sticks up for Grendel and us as the viewers find out why later on in the film. We find out that they have an affair together thus granting them an offspring who should be killed if they found he was alive. This reflects how humans are now in this century where everything revolves around sexual needs once again making it more modern since the epic never mentioned anything like this. Selma’s behavior at the end of the film shows some hatred as well as distress in her voice, almost as if she is worry the same events are going to happen again this time with Grendel’s son seeking revenge when she tells Beowulf “
