Grendel Vengeance In Beowulf's Poem

Decent Essays
If Grendel escaped unharmed after the fight with Beowulf, he would have been ashamed and try to come back for vengeance. In the poem, Grendel goes back to his mother’s lair to seek her help in getting vengeance on King Hrothgar and Beowulf. If Grendel got his mom on his side, he would most likely be able to defeat Beowulf. Unfortunately, Grendel got his arm ripped off and he was embarrassed of his defeat. In the poem, it states, “When Grendel inhabited Herot, the hall his till his crimes pulled him into hell” (Raffel 1254-55). Grendel was desperate for revenge after being banished from the town after killing Abel. He and his mother would do whatever they have to do to kill Beowulf. Most likely, the town would live in fear and distress the rest

Although Beowulf is still the hero he discovers that Grendel had a son with a witch Selma (Selma not mentioned in the book at nor how she had a child with grendel added as a dramatic scene for hollywood.) Then there is the possibility of the story to repeat again with Grendel's son, because his father and grandmother were both killed due to them being demons and the people being afraid of them….The king Hrothgar wanted them both dead because of his guilt he knew that killing Grendel's father for getting in his way was unfair and he needed to destroy what was causing him guilt in other words he did it for selfish reasons. If Hrothgar would have not killed grendel's father their wouldn't have been so many tragedies and deaths. Although, Grendel the whole time is judged for killing men because it was wrong and scared the people from…

Grendel is the first of three beasts that Beowulf is tasked with defeating in this epic. Grendel ensues immeasurable terror in the hearts of the Danes, but unlike many folkloric creatures, he has a human personality. While Grendel is by no means a dynamic character, he does have the motivation to wreak havoc upon Heorot Hall. He also has enough reason to define a cause for his aggression, and his tendency to be a pariah is clear since he and his mother are the only characters associated with Hell. The mention of Grendel being of "Cain's clan, whom the creator had outlawed and condemned as outcasts"(106-107) was likely shocking to Christian audiences, who knew Cain as a malignant soul from the Bible.…

Grendel, since he is a descendent of Cain, is one that is cursed by God himself, forced to wage “his lonely war, inflicting constant cruelties” on people (116: line:164-165). I would say that he is evil because of the hatred of his neighbors have made him bitter, but he is also evil because he is a demon. They call him a “fiend out of hell”, one that loves to work evil in the world (114: line 100). Even though he may be bitter because of the resentment, the fact that he is a demon that came out of hell makes him a monster, something that is evil from the roots of his origin. He is linked to the man Cain who was cursed by God himself for killing his own brother, an event that would conjure up significant resentment of the human race, part of…

Chrissy bradley I found this chapter to be a bit confusing, however after a brief discussion with one of my peers I made some connections. In the fourth chapter Grendel asked the sky why he can't have anyone to talk to and in chapter 5 he finds the dragon to talk. I think the dragon is a nihilist and he says he knows "the beginning, the present, the end . all time, all space." (62, 63).…

The way Grendel is portrayed in the novel is much more different then he is described in the epic poem Beowulf because Grendel in the novel shows curiosity, has empathy towards others, and wants to be known as a normal being instead of a monster. Grendel’s appearance would scare anyone the way it was described in the book and the poem, therefore it would be reasonable for people to jump to conclusions and assume he’s there to cause havoc. But Grendel appears for different reasons, he’s just curious. In the novel there is a scene where Grendel states “that night I saw men” (Gardner 23).…

Grendel in the novel is very different from Grendel in the epic poem Beowulf because Grendel in the novel has the ability to speak, has an actual mother that loves him, and is a developing character whereas Grendel in the poem is all animalistic, is born of demons without love, and is a very static character. In the novel, Grendel displays characteristics that his alter ego in Beowulf does not display. One of these major characteristics is the ability to speak. “‘You think me a witless fool,’ he whispered.…

The Grendel in Burton Raffel’s original translations of Beowulf is very different from the Grendel presented by John Gardener in his modern novel. The most striking differences between the two versions of the same monster are their physical appearance, home life and relationship to his mother, and Grendel’s cause of evilness. One of the most noteworthy differences between Burton Raffel’s Grendel and John Gardener’s Grendel is their physical appearance. In the original epic, Grendel’s physical appearance shares many similarities with a reptilian. According to canto eight, (Grendel) “strode quickly across the inlaid floor, snarling and fierce.…

The people of Hrothgar’s kingdom, Herot are convinced that he only murders them due to the enchanting songs of heroic deeds the bards sing in the magnificent mead hall. The narrator also leads us to believe that Grendel is jealous of all the riches and people that Hrothgar has, that Grendel is deprived of since Hrothgar completely disregarded Grendel as being his son. The details about Grendel in Beowulf show him as a horrible murderous beast without any feelings. In contrast from the dangerous behemoth, Grendel is depicted to be in Beowulf, John Gardner presents Grendel’s personal perspective in the book Grendel.…

To begin with, the final words of Grendel “Poor Grendel’s had an accident… So may you all.” were meant as a curse to affect mankind, the animals, the kingdom and especially those who gathered to watch him die. Grendel explains that “ Animals gather around me, enemies of old, to watch me die” (Gardner 173). They watch him die with excitement because they portray him as a horrible beast and they finally killed him after so long. Although, another way Grendel’s last words can be meant as a curse is the way he explains that “ They watch with mindless, indifferent eyes, as calm and midnight black as the chasm below me” (Gardner 173).…

Grendel is an innately evil demonic beast and his birthright is to be scorned by man as Cain’s evil offspring. As a result of this ostracism, he takes out his fury on the men in Heorot, killing whomever he can as his own form of warped vengeance stemming from a feeling of isolation as a born outcast. Despite Grendel’s misfortunes, which may garner sympathy from some, his actions are not justified by the situation he is in and, even in a violent, revenge-based society, Grendel is still the heartless beast the Danes see him as and his fate was well deserved. When Grendel is first introduced, he is actually described in a slightly sympathetic light.…
