Once upon a time, in a far away land, a child named Grendel was conceived.
He was a misunderstood child. He was born abnormally large. As a result, his father wanted to get rid of his “demonic” child. He had to find a way to get rid of Grendel without Grendel’s mother finding out. He decided to throw the baby off a cliff in the middle of the night while Grendel’s Dam (mom) was asleep. He took the baby to the edge of the cliff, and just as he was about to abort the baby, he heard a harrowing cry. He dropped the baby on the edge of the cliff and departed before he was seen. She had been shamed and shunned by the community nearby for cheating on her husband while he was at war. Instead of killing her, the Geats decided to take pity and punish

Where is your weapon?" Wandered Grendel perplexed. "My name is Beowulf. I am unarmed. I come in peace." replied Beowulf. Grendel came out of the shadows wielding an axe the size of a small tree, still suspicious and untrusting. "Why have you come here Beo-wulf?" "The Geats banished me from their kingdom. I am a mere simpleton wondering for shelter. If you help me, I will share some of my delicious mead" "what is mead?" Asked Grendel surprised that Beowulf didn 't run away from the terror brought by his mere presence. "Mead, my friend, is the most exquisite beverage in the world. You have not enjoyed life until you have tasted the sweet, bubbly liquor. Here have some." Intrigued, Grendel drank. The mead was so exquisite. The beverage relaxed all his sore muscles and left a warm, bubbly feeling in his stomach. Beowulf pretended to drink, waiting for his opportunity to strike. Grendel led Beowulf to a camp he had set up nearby. The two chatted and drank by the fire. "How do you do it Grendel?" "Do what?" "How do you wield such a hefty axe? I wonder if I am strong enough to lift such a hefty object.." "I don 't know my friend, you can try if you wish." Beowulf hobbled to the axe, tripping on lumber, making a show of trying to lift the axe. "Are are you sure your axe isn 't Thors hammer?" Beowulf joked. Grendel fell backwards and rolled on the ground laughing hysterically. In an instant Beowulf picked up the axe and swung down straight at Grendels chest. Grendel moved to try to dodge the attack, but his reflexes were too slow. The axe went straight through Grendel 's arm. Before Beowulf could finish him off Grendel clumsily ran away to his mothers concealed cabin. "My Grendel! What happened to you! Who did this?" She sobbed. "Beo-wulf" whispered

The story of Grendel is told from the point of view of a “monster” which contrasts the fact that normally books describing monsters are told from the point of view of humans. At the very end of the book Grendel has one last final encounter with the humans. One of the people, Beowulf horrifically attacks Grendel for no specific reason. As Grendel has his limbs ripped off, and is howling for his mother animals circle around him to watch him die; “Animals gather around me, enemies of old, to watch me die”. Finally Grendel dies.…

Traditional heroes grace the covers of comic books, the posters for films, and come to mind first when the word hero is mentioned. Traditional heroes are the Supermen of the world, the ones who are larger than life and embody every perfect trait everyone should aspire to have. Grendel, the hero of John Gardner’s novel of the same name, is not a traditional hero by any means. Not only is he not a human, nor attractive, but he storms meadhalls and eats people for entertainment; yet he still appears to portray very heroic qualities underneath the homicidal tendencies. Although he finds amusement in killing and consuming people, Grendel is a tragic hero and a victim of fate and circumstance.…

All living beings must face the inevitable fact that we all must die. In the poem, Beowulf, mortality plays an important part in many characters where they must confront an enemy that may lead to their death. The role of mortality is brought up of several times throughout the poem and some people argue that the characters are reminded of their mortality so they can preform as many deeds as they can so they be remembered by it. I argue that the characters are reminded of their mortality as a warning that there is always a stronger opponent out there and some day that opponent is going to be the one to end their lives. I argue this because you see characters like Grendel, Hrothgar, Beowulf and Beowulf’s men face their own mortality.…
