In this story the only true villain of this story is Grendel and the dragon, even though Beowulf had to fight Grendel’s mother as well. Grendel is only a good enemy for Beowulf to face, this fight would help Beowulf’s fame grow as a hero because Grendel is a supernatural being that came from hell as the offspring of Cain (Dr.Belk). The dragon is the worse enemy for Beowulf to face because it seems almost fated that he fights the dragon and will die keeping his people safe.Grendel’s mother is not considered by Beowulf or any warrior in this story to be an important enemy because she was just a women, even though she sounded more terrifying in the story in my opinion.     In John Gardner's, Grendel, the protagonist, Grendel goes through major changes about the way he views life and the way he views himself. Of course there are times where he comes to conclusions on his own due to his isolation from the real world, but there are antagonists in the story that do impact Grendel’s image like his mother, the dragon, and beowulf.
