The well-known epic poem, Beowulf, continuously strives for the new views of the thematic approach. Seamus Heaney translated Beowolf in an effort to help create different theories and views on this epic poem. This epic poem is based off Danish warriors seeking revenge on a monster, while being saved by a tenacious leader during the Anglo-Saxon time period. This has lead to two very different and yet similar films. “Beowulf and Grendel”, directed by Sturla Gunnarsson in 2005, and Beowulf, directed by Robert Zemeckis in 2007, provide and display many thematic similarities and discrepancies throughout the films.

Although this approach may be more correct to the poem it decreases the vital aspect of the viewer using his or her own thinking to pass judgment on the characters. Known for best computer generated imagery, in his 2004 film The Polar Express, Zemeckis’s continued with his path to convert Beowulf in a CGI imagery. By his approach to do so he displays Grendel as a troll, googy, unrelated character for most audiences. Zemeckis’s image for Grendel is similar to a character appearances in films such as Avatar minus the blue skin. Despite his physical changes to Grendel; strives for excellence elsewhere. In the beginning of the epic poem, Grendel slays the Danes quietly at night, while the Danes are sound asleep. While they are sound asleep, this makes Grendel unchallenged and successful. A slight change that Zemeckis’s decides to endure in the tale, by not immediately introducing Grendel opposed to Gunnarsson’s production. Zemeckis’s introduces Grendel to the Danes, when they are wide awake partying in the Mead Hall. Despite the Danes being wide awake, it does not help their cause as they witness death right before their eyes. As Zemeckis’s choice to display his delayed entrance…... Despite his attack at the Mead Hall, Grendel biggest threat was not present, Beowulf. Throughout the film, Grendel and Beowulf show a continuation of revenge theory. During Grendel and Beowulf battle, Zemeckis’s decides to change small details, but crucial details. Zemeckis’s adds a chain to Grendel’s arm, which forces his fleet of Heorot impossible as he ends up getting caught tied to the chain. Instead in the epic poem Beowulf rips out Grendel’s arm with his bare hands. By Zemeckis’s slight changes to Grendel, has the viewing audience be denied in another potential
