Grendel And Beowulf Comparison Essay

It's a commonly known fact that almost all movies originated from books, and this is absolutely the case with Beowulf the epic poem, which was translated into a movie. However although the poem and the movie are dramatically different, there are still some similarities in both characters Beowulf and Grendel that hold true in the epic and the movie. The author of Beowulf shows that Grendel is an evil and demonic, devilish creature that is cursed by God, whereas Beowulf is fearless and heroic- a courageous man who is watched over by God. These main characteristics are shown in the epic poem and in the movie as well and the two contrasting characters are still common tropes known today- the hero and the villain. He was also known for being so noble and brave people that looked up to him as a hero. In Anglo-Saxon culture, these traits were seen as extremely positive, even more so than they are today, because of the great emphasis on warriors and battle combat. Beowulf was the epitome of a hero, however in the movie some attempts were made to humanize him more so that we could better relate to him. Another one of Beowulf's defining characteristics was the fact that he was a good king and leader. Beowulf really looked up to Hrothgar as a father figure, due to the fact that he would help Beowulf by giving him advice on how to be a wise hero.
