Gregory In Romeo And Juliet

Improved Essays
In the opening scene of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Gregory and Sampson of the Capulet House are belittling the Montagues with jokes on how Sampson would take their “maidenheads” and push the men from the wall. Sampson is the one leading the conversation and remarks about the Montagues, while Gregory is elaborating on with him. Gregory asks questions such as, “Their maiden-heads?” when Sampson jests about it. This shows a dynamic between the two friends with the innocence in Gregory and the bluntness of Sampson. Their conversation conveys the hatred the Capulets have for the Montagues and the rivalry between them. When Abram, a member of the Montague house arrives on scene the two mock him by biting their thumbs; an act of defiance.

There are many people you could blame for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, but one might also say the two households are responsible for the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. An example of how the capulets play a part in this is when lady capulet says “Marry that ‘marry’ is the very theme I came to talk of. Tell me, daughter Juliet, how stands your disposition to get married”(Line fourteen, Act one Scene three, and Document B), the person one would blame in this quote would be the families(Capulet). This shows Lady Capulet is trying to pressure Juliet into getting married. Even after juliet says that she does not want to get married, her mother keeps pushing her into getting married by asking if she can “like of Paris’ love”( Line twenty four, Act…

Good morning/ afternoon. Today I’m here to persuade you to share my belief on who is ultimately responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. I believe, and before I conclude my speech I can guarantee you will too, that the feud is to blame for the deaths of our star-crossed lovers. 2.3 Gender roles/equlity in Verona The whole story of Rmoeo and Juliet is based on the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues thus it is not suprising that Verona is dominated by masculine tension. As well as masculine tension is also sexual domination and violence a part of the life in Verona. The very first scene of the play indicates that “the rivalry between the Capulets and the Montagues is also, for the men (Sampson and Gregory, both of the Capulet household), the impetus for an inward rivalry, an inward pressure to masculine self-assertion that cannot be appeased or concluded.”…

In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet the tragic and dramatic elements of the play are balanced by the comic relief dispersed through Act 1 via sexual puns, the nurse’s dialogue, and Mercutio ridiculing Romeo’s idea of true love. Shakespeare uses sexual puns all throughout act 1 in his drama. He includes it in the beginning of the play when Sampson talks to Gregory about about “cutting off the maids heads” and when the nurse supplies the memory of young Juliet saying she will fall on her back when Juliet gets older. The scene with Gregory and Sampson provides comic relief since the serving men of both sides of the feuding families are going to fight. “Tis all one.…

Shakespeare shapes ideas about conflict through the ever present nature of the feud. All characters in Shakespeare's play “Romeo and Juliet” find themselves effected by the conflict, especially Romeo and Juliet. Act 1 Scene 5 is very much a scene about love as it is the scene where Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time and share their first kiss. However, Shakespeare reminds the audience of the feud and how it will impact Romeo and Juliet's love by adding moments of conflict into the scene. This conflict is evident in the line spoken by Tybalt to Capulet “This, by his voice, should be a Montague/ Fetch me my rapier, boy ....…
