Gregg Shafel's Case Analysis

Although the Chief Executive Officer Mr. Gregg Steinhafel failed to fully execute all four of the principals of management I believe that a case can be made that he did at least in part use all of the principals at some point during the data breach and especially after that same breach. The first principal of management is planning. The way in which he successfully used this principal was in putting in a system for security that could have prevented the data breach in the first place, even though the security managers under him failed to properly use the system the way that it was designed (Smith, 2014). Also, after the breach had already happened he was able to formulate a plan to protect customers from continued damage to their credit …show more content…
The first on is competitive advantage. They had failed to take care of their customers by allowing the data breach to occur in the first place by not following the next subcategory which is innovation they had the appropriate technology but failed to use it. They have sense then put better security measures in place. The next challenge is managing diversity, Target currently has over ten thousand employees that participate in their diversity and inclusion council that represent different gender, race, and sexual orientation (Making authentic connections, 2016). The same council within the Target company also has several networks and interest groups formed by their team members, which helps with the next issue that is globalization. The fourth issue is managing new informational technology. That is an area that because of the data breach that they were obviously struggling with but Mr. Steinhafel was able to speed up the release of the new more secure chipped cards. Next issue that target is facing is that they have to deal with the ethical standard. They did a good job in not only keeping their customers aware of what was going on but they also made sure that they would be protected with the credit monitoring and insurance service that they paid for without having to show proof of any actual harm.
