He was featured in the Lima News as an eighth-grader at West Junior High. He garnered coverage due to his scoring at a high level. In Ohio during this time middle school was considered 5th-9th grade. Greg would go on to do things that were unheard of at his age. During the summer going into his freshman year at West Junior High he applied to the Five Star Basketball Camp in Pittsburgh. He averaged 20.2 points per game, while becoming a starter. He was now the head of the snake in the Spartan offense. Everything ran through him; he was now the poster boy of the Spartans. It wouldn't be till his final two years of high school that the phenomenon known as Greg Simpson would fruition. Greg’s junior year of high school he did the unthinkable; became Mr. Basketball for the state of Ohio. This year he also set the school record for points scored in a game, when he scored 57 in the first game of the season. He also set records for points per game (32.3) and most points in a season (984). He averaged 6.7 rebounds per game, 5.1 steals per game, and 6.7 assist per game. He also scored 35 or more points 13 times in the regular season. He led the Spartans to the regional finals where they lost to Toledo Macomber in double overtime. It was a heartbreaking
