At one point in the novel, Mortenson was getting interrogated by police officials and he was unsure of many subjects that the officials were asking. For instance, the quantity of students that went to the schools he had built and the abundance of schools that were built under his name (Mortenson 270). Throughout the novel, the hard process of building schools and making a name for oneself was happening quicker than one would expect. Unfortunately, the lies continue with the novel, Mortenson states he was kidnapped for eight days by the Taliban. There were pictures included in the book of the “Taliban group” of eight men with an addition of Mortenson holding an AK47 in the middle of the group. Significantly, Greg Mortenson was seen as one of the men, not as a kidnapped man in need of help. After the book was published, it was proven that those men were Mortenson’s friends and they helped him all throughout his journey. His past was his guideline to success, as well as his tragedies he will never forget. With all of the intelligence roaming around his family, he once said in memory of his father, “He taught me, he taught all of us, that if you believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything” (Mortenson 38). Educating children in a country that has reached the poverty line and has wars being fought all the time is not an easy task. Mortenson had the goal to educate all children, especially girls, and with his father’s legacy he knew he could make it happen. Many of the schools that were built turned into “ghost schools” because of the location or too many schools in one village and not enough children (Keyes and Schaffer 1). A lot of the money that was donated to his fund was then wasted because it did not have a purpose to be used.
