Greg Hardy Case Study

Greg Hardy wants to pursue an MMA career.

In 2013 Greg Hardy was an elite NFL pass rusher. He had a Career- best 15 sacks and was selected to the Pro Bowl. It looked like Hardy could be the NFL’s next elite pass rusher. However, the following two seasons turned out to be a whirlwind of arrests and accusations. It all started in 2014 when images of Greg Hardy’s girlfriend, Nicole Holder, surfaced. The graphic images show a bruised Holder after she was allegedly beaten by Hardy. The domestic abuse allegations were not the only run ins with the law in Hardy’s career. Hardy was also arrested for possession of drugs on multiple occasions. Hardy was apparently more trouble than he was worth, so he was cut by the Panthers and then the Cowboys.

Jay Glazer expressed that, “Competing in any sport is a privilege, Greg Hardy should not be granted the privilege.” Every professional sport is struggling with the reputation of their athletes. From college to the pro’s domestic abuse is an issue these sports teams are trying to avoid. By signing Greg Hardy to a deal the UFC would be shooting themselves in the foot. Hardy has been cut from multiple NFL teams, it should be obvious that he brings too much drama. Many have questioned the motives behind Hardy’s sudden interest in the UFC. Has it been a childhood dream of his? Or is he simply doing it to remain in the spotlight?

Hardy, just by announcing his plans to fight in the UFC has put himself back in the spotlight, exactly what he wants. Once his NFL career was cut short Hardy must have realized he no longer lived in the fantasy land where everybody adored him. In order to gain more attention he pulled this, what many would call, publicity stunt.

Hardy’s idea of switching to another sport for publicity seems awfully similar to that of Tim Tebow. Both Hardy and Tebow had short stints in the NFL and are now pursuing other sports. It appears that once you are in the spotlight it is hard to get used to a normal
