Self Concept Analysis of Greg Focker in Meet the Parents As human beings we base our own self concept on those around us. The company we keep is truly important because their positive and negative feedback onto to us can shape us as a person and determine on how we choose to act around them. In Meet the Parents, Greg Focker is a character that has a lot riding on this first impression with Pam’s parents. He desperately wants to marry Pam and with that comes asking for her father, Jack’s, permission. Greg’s self concept is swayed and often doesn’t fit who he is, instead he tries to be someone that Jack likes. Communication competence is when a person can communicate, “Effectively and appropriately.” (Adler R, Rosenfeld L, Proctor II L, pg. 19) Often times humans use one or the other when communicating, but sometimes we miss one of them which can lead humans to lie, hint, or equivocate things. Ethics of evasions are, “What we use to make difficult situations easier for the speaker and receiver of the message.” (Adler R, Rosenfeld L, Proctor II L, pg. 102) This can help a speaker be more effective in the way they’re speaking because they’re aware that maybe someone can handle the whole truth or they can’t. In the film Greg is not a competent communicator because he’s never truthful about his own thoughts and feelings. He uses too much evasion when talking to people when he should just be himself. At the end when Greg is in airport security, he’s finally able to effectively and appropriately tell Jack how he feels because he realizes that Jack will have more respect for him is he’s truthful. If Greg could have been a more competent communicator and realized the truth is what Jack wanted then he could have had an easier time meeting the

The way that Steinbeck allegorically illustrates his characters based on biblical figures reinforces the presence of religion at the time of the text and the emotions of society at the time of the text. In the novel, one of the main characters, Adam Trask is constructed based on the biblical Adam as well as the biblical Abel. Adam Trask is described as a trusting being with a genuine nature, setting him up as the Abel figure in the first generation of the Trask family. He is his father’s favourite and inadvertently stimulates the jealously of his brother, Charles. Brian and I also found a way to accept who we are and founded confidence in ourselves. At the end of the movie The Breakfast Club, it is noticeable the difference in how Brian was at the beginning when he was shy, and not confident of himself and at the end when he could accept who he was and be proud. For me it didn’t happen from one hour to another but with time, and a lot of pep-talks to myself, I could respect myself for who I am and not give to cents what others told me. This new founded confidence in myself not only help me become stronger mentally, but it also gave me a re-new determination to want to make me feel good on the outside as I was feeling in the inside. I begin to lose weight, and take time to myself.…

American Psycho, I think, is a film about a man that cannot come to terms with the totally subjective nature of his reality. One of the best scenes of Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) from the black comedy film American Psycho. In this scene, we saw a review of Bateman's routine, starting with the hard morning exercises that ended with his skin. He tells you in detail until we reach a very important scene. Patrick puts on his face a cleansing mask for his skin and removes it, which symbolizes his personality, as it may seem to his counterpart that he is similar to him, in appearance, in his interests.…
