My chosen political issue is improving health and wellbeing in the community. The issue in question revolves around the ability of the government and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to improve the standard of the population in terms of increasing their knowledge of public health issues and providing citizens with the opportunities to improve their health and the health of those around them. In order to assess this I have been engaged in various tasks which stemmed from being part of a NGO, Citizens UK. Specifically these tasks included attending and contributing to meetings every fortnight, from which events were planned and executed. It is based in the Ferryview health centre in Greenwich, and aims to improve health in the local region, with the main health issues targeted being High blood pressure and diabetes. To accomplish our goals of reducing issues our target area, a three part strategy was made, which meant we drafted the required projects to most effectively improve health and wellbeing in the local area. These three parts were: 1. Improving street lighting, 2. providing health training courses, 3.Starting up a gardening club. For the first goal, improving street lighting, we largely focused on pressuring governmental bodies to aid us with the task, as we did not have the permission, nor resources to undertake it ourselves. As a result we had to campaign to the council to consider improving the street lighting, and therefore support our cause. This helped me identify the link between my issue as it showed how NGOs have had to challenge governmental bodies, as well as how NGOs assume the responsibility of the government’s role. The next part, providing health training courses, involved working with members of the NHS Trust (therefore part of the government). By simply working with a subsidiary of the government, it highlighted the fact that NGOs do not always aim to challenge or oppose the government’s actions (or lack thereof), which surprised me knowing the general assumption that NGO’s are in place to challenge the government.
