A major topic surrounding this team is the fact that, due to a lack of underclassmen, this year’s Junior Varsity squad has been cancelled, forcing many freshmen and sophomores to play on the Varsity team. To Coach Locascio, this situation has both pros and cons. For the pros, it gives the younger players the opportunity to get valuable varsity experience, but also forces the playing time to be more spread out, meaning more players are getting less time. However, in the long run, this system may prove successful, as we have been able to witness younger players with long careers ahead of them grow into the varsity stars of Southold Soccer’s near future. This includes freshmen like Marie Mullen, Sabrina Basel, and sophomore Lucie Showalter, as they are lead and taught by seniors Raeann Berry and Rosemary Volinski from Greenport. Currently, the girls have a record of 4-6-1, with three games remaining against Mattituck, Southampton, and

To Play or Not To Play???“Put Me in Coach” When people reminisce about their high school years, fond memories of being at the height of fitness, spending countless hours with teammates, and playing in the “Big Game” are often treasured. However, some students at St. Anthony High School are choosing not to be involved in the athletic program for social and academic reasons. As a result, many are missing out on one of the most important aspects of their high school career. Although some believe that participation in high school athletics is a roadblock towards academic success and a satisfying social life, students should play at least one sport throughout high school because they will develop critical life skills and increase their physical…

The Central High School soccer team would make history in the season 2013-2014, and not one single person expects it. In the season there were only three more crucial games left before the big decisive game. Central prepared diligently, even staying after practice to ensure we were all ready for the biggest game in the soccer’s program, against our biggest rival, Smiths Station. While both Central and Smiths believed that they were ready to come off of that green soccer field with a victory, Central focused more on playing fundamentally and Smiths Station was worried about playing elaborate. Game day has finally came, the entire team felt so anxious that our bodies were shaking uncontrollably in nerves.…

I believe that interscholastic athletic programs are an extension of the classroom. Although academics come first in the secondary school system, the lessons that can be taught and learned from athletics cannot be duplicated anywhere else in the school environment. Sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance are just a few of the multitude of life lessons that can be learned through involvement in high school athletics. My expectations for our programs are lofty, not necessarily in term of wins and losses but in terms of building programs, being passionate about our sports and in doing things the right way, all the time. The wins and losses will take care of themselves.…

Regardless of me showering the Panthers with the aforementioned love, the Islanders need to move this franchise forward. They have done so off the ice - securing a long term lease to play at Barclays Center, taking away so many questions that players, both on the team currently, and possibly considering signing, have had in the past and lining their pockets with a guaranteed $50 million per season. They have new ownership, Jonathan Ledecky and Scott Malkin, taking the reins next year from Charles Wang. They have a spanking new practice facility being renovated at Eisenhower…

In light of the new state mandated desegregation of schools, one local high school is overcoming amazing obstacles. At the beginning of the school year parents and students rioted over the new desegregated school, T.C. William’s High. Despite this rioting and racism issues the football team has managed to shine, bringing the whole school along with the community together. The team themselves had issues with a new black head coach Coach Boone. T.C. William’s Titans was thought to me the underdog among football at the beginning of the school year and now is the team to beat.…

I did my observation at Miami’s women’s soccer game on September 6 against Florida International’s team. It also happened to be Senior Day, so a lot of families were there. There were also a lot of young girls wearing soccer jerseys, which makes me think that a soccer team was there. It was a very hot (around 90 degrees) and sunny afternoon, and a lot of people were sitting with umbrellas to block the sun. Both teams played very hard, but neither team scored until the last 9 minutes.…
