Greenleaf Scholarship Analysis

Decent Essays
I believe I should be chosen to receive the Greenleaf scholarship for one simple reason; I am dedicated to bettering myself and the world around me. I know that in order to do this I need to further my education because education is the key to creating opportunity. This dedication is something my parents instilled in me from a young age. Additionally, I know high education will allow me to help the most people possible. My passion for bettering the world around me is evident in the various activities I am involved with in and out of school. The most prominent of these though is the Gay Straight Alliance I am co-president of. For the first two years of high school I was completely lost, I did not know my place in my community, but when I

Although my high school years are mostly defined through academic success, I would have to say my most meaningful achievements came through the North Carolina FFA. This national organization provides me with countless opportunities to showcase my leadership abilities in my school, community, and state. Obtaining the positions of Vice President and President of my high school FFA chapter has had an enormous impact on my life. These positions led to serving on nominating committees, planning community events, attending leadership conventions and conferences, and participating in a state-qualifying parliamentary procedure team. It was these experiences that gave me a passion for public speaking and Agribusiness.…

Leaving home for the very first time to attend a university that is miles away can be scary and finding a community can be difficult. Most young adults leaving home usually have a support system; a group of people that have helped them get to where they are. However, some adolescents have had no support throughout their high school careers — or even their life. Emancipated youth or minors in the foster care system are separated from their families and often times are raised in unstable conditions. Thus affecting their childhood and impacting the decisions they make and who they will become as future adults.…

As mentioned previously, this program is somewhat unique in that its main goal is to prep low-income students for college and then give them scholarships covering the cost of tuition. Not many programs are as comprehensive as the Valley Scholars program. The only other similar programs are from other universities in the United States, however, even their programs differ. According to Shaun Mooney, the Director of the Valley Scholars program, when starting this program at James Madison University, he and other staff members visited Rutgers University to learn about their program—what works, who the target population is, and if it would be feasible to replicate and fit with students in the Harrisonburg area. Two large differences between the…

The accomplishment of receiving the Jumpstart scholarship would do wonders in the next step for my education in the subsidizing of the costs that come with attending college. I seek to attend Johnson & Wales University and upon acceptance, have been fortunate enough to receive a significant number of grants and loans from the university that nearly cover my entire college tuition. Yet, my parents and myself still face the obstacle of paying for room rates as well as possible meal plans for the trimesters. This obstacle is only made harder in the additional expenses of books, transportation, off-campus meals and personal items. So, the possibility of receiving this scholarship plays a major factor into how far I will get into attending my first…

Meeting with the Spectrum group today (an LGBTQ group of students on campus) was the essence of social advocacy that includes actions that would benefit individuals, groups, and the campus society itself. After speaking with Abby & Destinee from CICI, it is clear that separate LGBTQ groups need to work together and learn about each other. Hence, I am trying to be a liaison for the Prism group (LGBTQ faculty and staff), Spectrum, Student government LGBTQ senator, and the chairperson for the presence of LGBTQ on campus, along with Lucy Cross, to create a conversation between all the groups so they have more solidarity and a presence on campus. I look forward to see how this will work out. I believe that this will help challenge campus prejudice…

“If you can’t love yourself how in the hell you going to love somebody else? “ While this particular quote ends every episode of RuPaul Charles’ self titled reality show RuPaul‘s Drag Race, most people have heard this sentiment throughout their life. It is made clear from a young age that it is important to accept who you are; unless, of course, your identity deviates from what is deemed normal. In my case, living in a Catholic, Republican, southern Louisiana suburb, being gay put me way outside of the bounds of loving myself. When I looked in the mirror I saw someone out of place in a multitude of ways: red hair, heavy set (as my mom would tell me), and queer.…
