Green Frog Lab

I spotted the Green frog or can be called “Lithobates clamitans” in the pond during our first lab looking for dragon flies. The scientific name is Rana Clamitans. Also, the frog was classified under Species. The green frog is very common and found all around in North America. The frog looked about full grown and was half in the water and half out the water soaking up the sun. It was a bright green color staying as still as can be, so it was hard to spot. It was a bright and fairly warm day, so there were many wildlife creatures like beavers, many frogs, and turtle’s sun bathing on a log in a different area of water. I chose the Green frog because frogs are one of my favorite animals growing up, so I have always thought they were cute and interesting. I used to walk to a big pond down the street at my old house and go frog and turtle catching during hot summer days.

The article says, “several species of amphibians restrict their activities to home ranges and territoriality is absent among them.” So, researchers started doing research in places like Michigan and New York to test if the absence of territorial behavior is actually true. The results of this study is that the males are territorial during mating season. The researchers noticed and observed the male frogs bring more aggressive during this time by jumping and attacking other competition. Most of the territories were near shore and by artificial shelters made by the frogs. The female’s behavior was the opposite of the males. They would just hangout during the day and at night move to the male’s territory to mate.
