Greek Yogurt Research Paper

When I first came to the United States three years ago, I went to Stop & Shop to get some regular plain yogurt, the one I knew as a kid and used to eat back home and I grew up with. As I am walking by the yogurt section it was almost impossible to find the plain yogurt. I was so overwhelmed by so many brands of the new trendy type of yogurt called “Greek yogurt” which has a monopoly on the yogurt market. I realized how ignorant I am, and I felt the fear of missing out not catching up with the new trends. No wonders why I’m getting fat and old! It was my first time to notice how the Greek yogurt is so popular, so as someone who had never had this type of yogurt in my life until that time, I was wondering: What is so special about it to become so admired suddenly? …show more content…
Sales of Greek yogurt amounted to about 2.6 billion dollars in 2013, up from 391 million dollars in 2010. The main players on the market include Chobani, Danone and Yoplait. The reason for the popularity of Greek yogurt, of course, is health and because “All the cool kids are doing it”. It has been super marketed as non-fat, low calories and high protein alternative to regular yogurt. Unlike regular yogurt, the Greek variety is strained of excess liquid, which gives the yogurt a much thicker and creamier consistency. However, the one-million-dollar question is, is it better for us than regular yogurt as those brands claim? There is no reason to think that Greek yogurt has not secured its place at the top. There are, however, some things threatening its image, and in this assignment I will talk about some of these things that may cause a huge disruption in the Greek yogurt
