The revolution was lead by a society called Filiki Eteria, who under the Leadership of Alexander Ypsilantis aimed to unite all Greeks in an armed organization to overthrow Turkish rule led by Sultan Mahmud II and revive the Byzantine Empire which fell in 1453.
