Greek Mythology's Influence On Literature

Before major discoveries in science and technology, early humans used myths and stories to explain how the world came to be. Greek mythology has been around for thousands of years and it has shaped many aspects of western society. However, Greek art and mythology has also had a powerful impact on Roman culture. Greek mythology also influences religions such as Christianity. Many stories in the Old Testament are very similar to Greek myths. Greek mythology also impacts literature, art, science, film, and sports. Additionally, Greek mythology is inspiration for modern day fairytales. The story of Psyche and Cupid is similar to that of Cinderella, by the Brothers Grimm. Psyche is the youngest and most beautiful daughter of a great King. Prince Charming is rich, handsome, and of high status, which makes him similar to Cupid, the god of love and Psyche’s husband. Psyche and Cinderella alike deal with the trials of envious older sisters. Cinderella’s steepsisters, Anastasia and Drisella, forced her to do all of the work around the house, psychologically tormented her, stole her things, and abused her in various other ways. In the beginning of the myth, Psyche is actually close to her older sisters.
