I’m going to tell you a story. In Greek Mythology, there were two groups of powerful Beings: The Titans and the Gods. The Gods had overthrown the evil Titans centuries ago. One day, Prometheus, one of the good Titans, created the first man. Prometheus was proud of his creation, so he watched over Man and helped him whenever he could. After many years of trickery from Prometheus and with Mankind gaining more and more wealth, Zeus, the eldest god, thought of a cunning punishment. So, what can we do to stop them? That’s where compassion enters the equation. If there’s one thing that I learned in the Bristol Road IB Program, it’s to make connections from your work to the world, to think big. Imagine someone in a very foul mood, that person might go home after work or school and pass that same irritation to someone else. Another person, they might go to work the next day and fire someone because of yesterday’s irritation. That unemployed person could go home and end up yelling at his family, because of his own problems. And it goes on, and on, and on. But what if, that first person went home in a wonderful mood? Wouldn’t they would spread joy and laughter throughout the house? How about when someone from their family goes to work the next day and spreads a little more happiness and brightens someone’s day, when they’ve been going through a lot? I believe that compassion doesn’t always need to be spread through words or money - an expression or a gesture can do it as

Are people born with the character trait of compassion, or do they have certain experiences in order to learn compassion? There are hundreds of homeless people living on the streets who need help from people that are fortunate enough to have better circumstances. Barbara Lazear Ascher writes “On Compassion” to explain to people that they need to go out into the world and connect with other people who are less fortunate than themselves so that they can learn and develop compassion. By using imagery, concrete diction, and syllogism she successfully creates her argument to prove this.…

Odyssey Mini-Paper The relationships between Gods and mortals in the Odyssey vary tremendously based on the attributes of the mortal. If the mortal has traits that are similar to that of which the God/Goddess governs then that mortal will most likely have the favor of that God. The relationship between Odysseus and the Goddess Athena as described in the Odyssey is a unique and interesting one. Unlike many God to mortal relationships Athena and Odysseus seem to have a close and intimate relationship.…

Eteocles had returned to Athens in ruin. 404 BC had seen the uproot of power in Greece. The Athenian navy had fallen with the addition of the Persian force in the great Peloponnesian War, and soon the city of Athens itself was near starvation, its people desperate and at the end of their ropes. There had been no other option but for Athens to turn tail and run, seceding victory to the Spartan forces and ending the war after over 30 years of sporadic and inconsistent battle. Peace suited Athens better, but they would never see the glory of the time before the war, making many question what had caused the Gods to remove their favor so.…

While reading the excerpt “The Titans and The Great Gods of Olympus” I was most interested in the Greek god Apollo. He stood out to me especially because of his connection with music. Music is such an enormous part of my life and something that I adore, so Apollo relates to my life more than the other gods and goddesses do. He is also known for being the Healer, and taught men the how to heal. “He is a beautiful figure in Greek poetry, the master musician who delights Olympus as he plays on his golden lyre; the lord too of the silver bow, the Archer-god, far-shooting; the Healer, as well, who first taught men the healing art” (Hamilton 30).…

On the surface, the Odyssey depicts the gods as all-powerful beings manipulating humans in pursuit of their own ends while the humans are the poor pawns of some celestial chess match. However, it is important to remember that the myths of the gods were constructed by humans and that there is logic behind the creation of them. Upon deeper reflection, both gods and humans gain something from the existence of the other party whether it is some material exchange or a subconscious mental reward. The relationship between gods and humans is characterized by mutually beneficial exchanges that demonstrate a human need for comfort, comprehension, and order in a chaotic and unknown world.…

The Greco-Roman pantheon and the Norse pantheon are extremely similar to one another with similar roles. From Thor to Jupiter to Odin to Hephaestus, the gods in the pantheons. The “trickster” archetype is common throughout both even though it has a more obvious presence in the Norse Pantheon. The honorable warrior and thunder lord archetypes are almost explicitly the same since honorable warriors were at the height of both societies. The main goddesses in both are also extremely similar in their status as queens and their sovereignty over love and intimacy.…
