Greek Mythology: The Story Of Theseus

Greek Mythology teaches us that different life lessons in different ways. These stories have been told for thousands of years. These myths will continue to teach us moral principles. The myth of Theseus teaches that you shouldn’t always depend on love. Theseus was son to King Aegeus of Athens and Aethra. King Aegeus told Aethra “if we shall have a son, then when he comes of age, tell him to lift this rock and take my sword and sandals” ("Theseus Adventures"). When Theseus became of age his mother took him to where the large rock lied and told him to lift it. He wrapped his arms around the large rock and lifted it. His mother told him to grab the sandals and sword and flee to Athens. Aethra told Theseus to go overseas to Athens, but Theseus refused and was brave and bold enough to go by land. On his way to Athens, he faced a few challenges and saw near death. When Theseus reached Athens, Aegeus was married to a sorceress, Medea. Medea didn’t like Theseus because she assumed he would throw her out of the kingdom, so she tricked Aegeus into thinking Theseus wanted to kill him and told him she would poison Theseus with magic wine. When he got back from slaying the Minotaur, Dionysus told him he couldn't marry Ariadne's because he had chosen her to be his wife. Theseus was so heartbroken that he forgot the promise he made to his father that if he returns back to Athens alive to change the black sails to white sails.
