This is a secondary source which can be found at the National Museum of Athens. It is the most authentic replica of the real Athena Parthenos made in the 2nd century, approximately 700 years after the original one was made. Reminiscent to the Athena Parthenos, the Varvakevion Athena Statue depicts Athena in all her glory. The goddess wore a warrior’s helmet, sleeveless robe and biblike aegis. On the palm of her right hand, stood a human-sized Nike, the goddess of victory. This sculpture portrayed the goddess of love undressing for her bath. Its original commissioner believed it to be scandalous that they rejected it in favor of clothed one. Subsequently, the Knidian Aphrodite became one of the most famous statues in Ancient Greece. It inspired a number of nude and semi-nude representations of the goddess, one of them being the famous Venus de Milo.
It is a very useful source for my investigation on Greek mythology influence, as it shows how Aphrodite, a goddess in her own right, was considered one of the most popular subjects of ancient Greek art. As the goddess of love, sex and physical beauty, she was considered a muse among numerous sculptors and painters. Despite being a ‘myth’, Aphrodite’s statue has proven that Goddesses have exerted their influence in Classical
