Ares, the God of War, is the son of Zeus and Hera. Both of Ares's parent's hated him. He was the most hated son of Zeus. (Hamilton 31) In some legends Ares and his sister, Eris were born when Hera touched a flower. This shows one of the reasons that Zeus might hate Ares so much.("Ares" The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia) Occasionally people would "rejoice in the delight of Ares' battle." People would often say they escaped "the fury of the ruthless god." He is called "murderous, blood stained, the incarnate curse of mortals;

Ares would always take sides with Aphrodite.(Hamilton 262) All of Ares's friends were with him in the battlefield "to urge men onto slaughter each other." Groaning and "the voice of triumph" were heard as the "earth steamed with blood." The war continued when Athena persuaded Pandarus, a Trojan, to "break the truce and shoot an arrow at Menelaus." Athena was on the side of the Greeks during the Trojan War.(Hamilton 264) When Diomedes reached Hector he saw Ares too. Ares was fighting for Hector. At the sight of Ares, Diomedes told the Greeks to fall back. Hera went to Olympus and asked Zeus "if she might drive that bane of man, Ares, from the battlefield." Since Zeus hated Ares even though he was his son he gave her permission. Hera then went over to Diomedes and urges "him to smite the terrible god and have no fear." Diomedes then "hurled his spear" at Ares. "Athena drove" the spear "home" and it "entered Ares' body." Ares then "bellowed as loud as ten thousand cry in battle, and at the awful sound trembling seized the whole host, Greeks and Trojans alike." "Bully at heart" and unable to bear "what he brought upon unnumbered

    Throughout history, the presence of violence justified by the credence in godly figures is exemplified, especially in Aeschylus’ The Oresteia, and Homers’, The Odyssey. Although both archaic works concern the ideologies and practices of faith in the Greek mythological gods, the reasoning for violent actions and their means of justification differ in their aspiration for and fulfillment of vengeance, their justification through the divine, and their means of punishment. In The Oresteia, Orestes, the son of Agamemnon, was exiled from the House of Atreus by his mother, Clytemnestra, the Queen of Argos. Upon the return of Agamemnon from the Trojan War, Clytemnestra and her lover, Aegisthus, murdered Agamemnon due to his sacrifice of Iphigenia,…

    When thinking of men competing over women as if they were an object, this idea today seems misogynistic and petty to many people. On the contrary, the men of the Iliad, like Agamemnon in particular, did not think this way and took the idea of capturing women as prizes during war very seriously. To these men, this did not apply to them and it meant receiving kleos, or glory, as a token of success and victory and part of their eternal legacy. We are not of the same breed, we never will be, the deathless gods and men who walk the earth” (Homer 5. 506). Apollo is very tolerant of Diomedes in his first three attempts to harm him, but he quickly loses his patience and knows it is time to put Diomedes back in his place. With only a few words, Apollo shows how truly superior he is to Diomedes and strike fear into his heart. Diomedes soon sees the error of his ways and regrets the way he acted towards the gods.
