Greek Influence On Roman Culture

Roman Mythology The great city of Rome, we all know how Rome came to its great fall, but what about how it all began. Greek was very influential on Rome's development and cultures. The Roman have two stories to how their city began. With Rome's various versions of “Romulus and Remus”,the more famous version of how Rome began, this story has everything from Roman culture, wars, and Rome’s very influential way to run a government. The Roman culture has it all, fashion, art, and food. Although most of Rome's culture is based off of Greek culture, the Romans adopted many aspects of the culture and made the culture their own. Girls would wear bullas until they were married. The art of Rome was just as amazing as the fashion. Roman’s had a great selection of artwork, from painting and sculpting to music and literature, Romans did it all. The first paintings produced during this era were based on the overthrowing of the Etruscan kings. Among these paintings were the theme of portraits, landscapes, mythology, animals, still life, and sexual encounters. Roman painters painted on wood, panels, and like cave men the walls. “The portraits were attached to burial mummies at the face, from which almost all have now been detached. They usually depict a single person, showing the head, or head and upper chest, viewed frontally. The background is always monochrome, sometimes with decorative elements.” (crystalinks.org). Landscapes weren’t as accurate as a portrait would have been at this time because of the scale and spatial depth being a bit off. Other special paintings were paintings of triumphs which have disappeared throughout but mostly influenced the carvings of military sarcophagi. Sculptures were also used for funerals. Roman Sculptors would make miniature versions of Greek sculptures out bronze and marble. Sculptures were a great propaganda tool used to support the legitimacy of the emperor powers. Romans played a numerous amount of instruments. Those instruments were made up of wind instruments, organs, strings, and percussion. The cithara could be played for serious events or just for enjoyment. According to the Roman myth of Romulus and Remus, after Remus jumped Romulus’ wall and died, Romulus continued to build the city of Rome on Capitoline Hill.You cannot talk about Rome and not bring up the architecture. from their legendary domes to their famous triumphal arches which both are made from one of Rome's important building material, concrete. Romans believed that their buildings should sway and stun as well as operate public activities. Among these building innovations was the Roman temples. In the cella(main room) of the temples the cult picture of the deity they worshipped. All Roman gods were worshiped at a Pantheon temple, which is the best preserved temple in Rome today. The Roman legend tells that the original “Pantheon was built on the very site and was dedicated to Romulus, their mythological founder, after he ascended to heaven from that site”, (romeonsegway.com).
