Storytelling has been an activity since the beginning of early civilization. With their stories people were able to convey messages as well as lessons that are better told than experienced. The Greeks were no different when it came to storytelling and as their religion came to develope so did many great stories of gods and heroes. These stories reflected ideas circulating through the culture on topics of morals as well as an explanation for how the world came to be. Greek people were very interested in the ideas of heroism. This is represented with their many tales on young strong men who go on dangerous journeys and exemplify the qualities what it meant to be a hero in those time. Kings in greece were highly regarded people and Theseus, after his late father's death, became a ruler of some sort. Instead of staying king, Theseus chose to organize a different type of government. He made it so that everyone was equal and allowed for citizens to vote. This shows his ability to manage and why people regarded him so highly. He chose to make a fair system so that everyone had a voice. As well as being a great leader he was also a noble protector of his people and others alike. A major story in greek mythology that reflects his protecting tendencies is the story of the minotaur. The minotaur was a half bull, half man with an appetite for humans. Every seven years twelve young athenians were sacrificed to the beast. Theseus, wanting to put a stop to it, volunteered to be one of the twelve, only this time he would kill the minotaur and stop it from killing every again. His plan was successful and he slayed the monster with his bare hands. This action proves his ability to protect those who might be unfairly hurt. This is not the only case of Theseus defending a group of people. On one of his journeys he killed and got rid of many bandits that had been terrorizing the people traveling by. Theseus’s way of government and feat of killing the minotaur are two ways that exemplify his management and defensive qualities.
