The Goddess of the Moon
The Greek gods and goddesses have always been something we were interested in. Many tales have been told of those times. Even with all it variations of the same tale the outcome is almost always the same. The Greek gods and goddesses were paid homage in their era that is how they retained power. The Greek goddess Artemis, even being a secondary goddess was worshiped and revered. This essay is to tell of who the Greek goddess Artemis is, how she came to be, and a few famous tales that impacted the skies.
The Greek goddess Artemis is a daughter of Greek god Zeus and Titaness Leto. She was born on the Island of Ortygia also known as Delos (3.). She is known as the goddess of hunt, wild animals, …show more content…
Artemis guarded her virginity and the virginity of the maidens that accompanied her very harshly. One case regarding Callisto, after being seduced by Zeus, was found out when taking a bath with Artemis. Artemis was enraged that she had broken her vow and turned her into a bear. In one version of this Hera again was not pleased with Zeus’ infidelity and urges Artemis to think Callisto was a normal bear and to kill her. Zeus then came to the rescue and turned Callisto into the constellation Arctos, The Great Bear, also known as Ursa Major. Hermes saved Arcas from the womb of Callisto and took him to be raised by Maia. Later Arcas joined his mother in the sky as Arctophylax, The Little Bear, also known as Ursa Minor (7.). Even being the goddess of virginity it did not mean that Artemis would not fall in love. Artemis had only one love and that was with the mortal Orion. In the Mythological version, Apollo got jealous of Orion being that before he was the only other male in Artemis’ life that he sent a Scorpion to kill Orion. Orion tried escaping the scorpion by swimming into the ocean. All the while Apollo was convincing Artemis that someone had raped one of her priestesses. Artemis was enraged and asked who the offender was and when Apollo pointed to Orion. Artemis did not know about the scorpion chasing him and she thought he was trying to escape after being outed. Artemis shot an arrow at Orion and killed him. After all was said and done Artemis went to the Priestess that was said to have being raped by Orion only to find out it was all a lie. In the grief of her friend, she shot Orion into the sky making him a constellation Orion to atone for
