How many Greek gods can you name? The Greeks worshiped many gods and goddesses. The most important gods lived on Mt. Olympus, which was believed to be the center of the world to the ancient Greeks. The twelve gods are referred as the Olympians. Zeus, Ares, and Apollo are the most interesting and well-known gods of Olympus. Zeus is the ruler of Olympus and all gods of the world. The planet Jupiter is called after his Roman name. Zeus is the god of the sky, thunder and lightning, law, order and justice. He is also known to have many lovers. Hera, his sister and wife, often tries to get revenge on his lovers and children. Even so, many of Zeus’s sons and daughters, like Artemis, Hermes, and Dionysus, are not the children of Hera. Ares, or Mars, is the god of warfare and bloodshed. He is the son of Zeus and Hera and the brother of Hephaestus, the god of fire and the forge. Though he was tall and handsome, his violence caused the other gods, even his parents, to hate him. One exception was Aphrodite, the god …show more content…
He is also the god of archery along with his older twin sister Artemis, the goddess of the moon and hunters. Apollo and Artemis are the children of Leto, a goddess of motherhood, and Zeus. When she found out Leto and Zeus had children, jealous Hera commanded all lands to forbid Leto from giving birth there. However, Leto found a floating island that was not attached to the ocean floor, and therefore not considered land, and was able to give birth to the twins. Apollo is shown as a young, beardless and athletic god on sculptures and other artifacts. Although there are countless gods in ancient mythology, the Greek Olympians are the most interesting. Unlike the almighty and invincible gods of other cultures, Greek gods seem to have characteristics that make them closer to imperfect humans, like quarreling and making mistakes.
