Greek Culture Research Paper

Classical Greek culture has, and always will be, a topic of western civilization that is studied and taught amongst people of today’s society, and those to come. There is much to be learned about civilization during that time. How people lived, taught, and learn is still being improved upon. As well as the abundance of activities that ancient Greeks participated in such as sports, the arts, and politics. Classical Greece, despite having many smaller cities which were not nearly as active, updated, or wealthy, had two primary large cities. These were named Athens, and Sparta, although Athens was the larger of the two. The city was named after Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The myth behind this reasoning was one told in many folklore to this day. It’s said that between Poseidon, the god of the seas, and Athena, the towns people wanted to find who would become their benefactor so-to-speak. Poseidon gave the city water, providing streams throughout the city, promising for the people to always have water. It was sea water, though, and not drinkable. Athena gave the city an olive tree, a promise to always have food, oil, and wood for fires. The myth still holds true to this day though, as olive trees may be found throughout the city. Philosophy and science were significant parts of their everyday lives. Topics such as geometry and astronomy can first be credited to ancient Greeks as they made the largest discoveries of that time. Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle were, and still are, possibly the most significant philosophers in history. Socrates, whom began the legacy, was the founder of Western Civilization philosophy. Plato, his student, went on to then teach Aristotle. The importance of philosophy in ancient Greek culture still remains one of the most respected and studied ideas in that field even
