Greek Club Disadvantages

Many upcoming freshmen are hypnotized by all the “Go Greek” propaganda that is all around the school. Ask any Greek student what are the benefits of going Greek. They will probably say: better academic standing, resume booster, social ties, profound connections, and brotherhood/sisterhood relationships that lasts a lifetime. This study not only examines the benefits of joining a social Greek club but also the cons of it. It will also go into depth about the membership and the disaffiliation rate. Research shows that Greek students are more likely to perform volunteer work and they begin their careers right after graduation. Students who are involved in any club at all tend to graduate on time and graduate school applications. Now entering freshmen must have a 3.0 GPA which promotes good academic growth from the start. With that being said, more female students report having a higher GPA than when they weren’t in Greek life. Once a student enters into Greek life, they must maintain a certain GPA requirement. The desire for more social events and more parties does take a tale. The devotion for sisterhood/brotherhood and philanthropy goes on the back burner. The main reasons why one joined the organization in the first place. Higher rates of alcohol consumption and binge drinking have been reported in Greek organizations than in non-Greek organizations. Males in fraternities do have a higher percentage in alcohol consumption along with smoking. Also one example could be finical status. The dues do not even total the whole cost.
