There are five different kinds of columns That the greeks used; which were an Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Composite. An Order is a combination of a certain style of column. One of the columns is the Doric which is plain and more sturdy than the others. The Ionic is thinner and more elegant. Next the Corinthian is more rare but is used on temples more often, it is very elaborate and decorated with leaves and ferns. The Tuscan is a more simple pillar compared to the others that was larger at the base and smaller at the top. Lastly the Composite is a mixed design between the ionic pillar with acanthus leaves added as well. Over time temples started to be built out of wood but gradually changed into stone because of the strength. Some temples even has both materials made with in it. The stone used was either limestone or marble. Each stone was strong but the marble could be polished and could be made to look better. In some temples they would use wooden beams to hold up the roof. The reason for the columns is that they could be used to let in more light but also keep the roof sturdy and strong.
