Traditions in Greek and Canadian culture are closely related to each other since they both throw items at the newlyweds however, the difference between the two is that in Greek weddings, the groom is lightly slapped by the priest and that the groom exchanges stefanas with his wife. In a Greek wedding, throwing rice and making making a gesture where it seems as if they are spitting at the groom and bride are common because it offers the couple good luck and wards off evil. In the movie, guests were creating a spitting motion which, as stated earlier, blesses the couple with good luck and averts evil. In Canadian traditions, rose petals are thrown at weddings rather than spitting because it represents the love and beauty in the wedding itself.
