The story “The Necklace” shows a middle class lady who is greedy and careless in having a desires to be in the upper class. Her husband, a government clerk, has a fair, decent paying job; she still wishes he was rich and powerful. Her friend that she somewhat envies her because she is rich and have nice things by the end of the story, Mathilde was shocked that all nice things are not expensive. Being jealous, greedy, self-conscious, are many more factors that portray throughout the story end up destroying her life. A diamond necklace was the centerpiece of the story which lead to the symbolism of wealth and higher social status. Mathilde found out that her husband was invited to a special party. She felt sad that she couldn’t afford a nice dress to attend. Mathilde thought about the four hundred francs her husband was saving for a gun. “He had a grown little pale, because he was laying aside just that amount to buy a gun and treat himself to a little shooting next summer” (Maupassant 347). The husband felt sad for Mathilde because she didn’t have anything nice to wear. The husband had other options without spending a lot of money he suggested that she should wear decorations around her dress or a less affordable dress. Mathilde suggests not cold heartily towards him of not wearing a less affordable dress. It was very selfish of her taking all of her husband money for one little occasion. Things has changed overtime compared in the 18th century. In today’s society some people are very insecure about themselves. First reason why social media such as Twitter, Facebook, and especially Instagram. Having people being self-conscious going into the public eye, fears that they will be judged or laugh at. People will do anything to get attention or “likes” in this social media frenzy. I, myself, tend to stay away from the social media because I don’t want to be caught up of being somebody’s minion such as getting plastic surgeries and wearing foreign expensive clothes. I have become of victim of buying the most expensive shoes and clothes time to time if I can afford it, but buying expensive things, trying to impress people is only hurting themselves because they are trying to get attention from the “popular” or “rich” people, but in reality they probably couldn’t afford it. Another example is reality TV , a booming business where people just sign up for a show get to those extra few followers on social media and for the money. In reality the productions of these shows are exploiting them and portraying them the wrong way. At the end of the day people have to take off their mask of somebody they are trying to prove to be, but in reality we are ordinary
