In the story The Monkeys Paw by W.W Jacobs there are several different messages to the story but the central message that stood out was greed. In the story greed was shown based off the characters and their personality and their worldviews and what they wanted in life. There were various archetypes, worldviews, and terminology in the book that help back up the idea of greed and that if you are to greedy and wish for more then what you actually need consequences can occur and the supernatural will take affect to help teach a lesson.

The number three sometimes symbolizes evilness, perversion, and religion. The story is mostly structured around the number three seemingly to try and emphasize the evilness of greed and the revenge for the family’s self-indulgence. The central force of the story is the monkey’s paw, which will grant three separate owners three wishes each. The White family is made up of three people. Mr. White being the third owner and the first owner wishing death upon the third wish. The close family friend Sergeant Morris begins talking about his adventures in India after three glasses of whisky and begs Mr. White three times not to take the paw. “But I warn you of the consequences”. The representative from Maw and Meggins stutter at the Whites’ gate three times before he builds up enough courage to walk up the path to their door. “Three times he paused at the gate, and then walked on again”. Mrs. White orders her husband three times to wish Herbert alive again before he retrieves the paw. And the so thought corpse of Herbert knocks three times before Mrs. White hears him. The story is separated into three parts, which take place at three times of day, and three different types of weather. Part one occurs in the evening during a rainstorm. Part two takes place during the morning of a bright winter day. Part three is set in the middle of a chilly, windy night. The last two days symbolizing death with winter and cold.
