Based off of the “What Caused the Salem Witch Trial Hysteria of 1692” article, it had said that people could’ve gone delusional based off of the LSD hallucinogens in the grains, caused by the Indian raids. Also Charles Upham had this theory where kids were just acting to get the attention, in document D, which makes me believe is one of the reasons why the Salem trials had started. The last reason why I believe the witch trials commenced is because there were better soil to grow crops on one side of the town, which was the rich side, causing the poverty-stricken people to become envious towards the wealthy. Even though everybody has their own opinions, I believe that the Salem witch trial began because of people had hallucinations, attention-seekers, and people being jealous based on the…

When faced with stressful situations, a physiological reaction occurs known as the fight or flight response. The body releases large amounts of adrenaline, which leads to actions of either escape or attack. This reaction can occur, not only under survival threats, but also in “attacks” like an argument. The stress hormones and adrenaline released give the courage and determination necessary to overcome and fight the challenges at hand. When Giles Corey is faced with adversity, such as his own imminent death, his fight or flight response kicks in and gives him the courage to remain unyielding in his beliefs and to fight, rather than escape by telling a lie to the government of Salem.…

Giles Corey is wrongfully accused and tortured to death, despite having innocent and reasonable motives, filled with both resentment and curiosity. Giles is an old man, old enough to maintain a hateful relationship between the Putnams and him, which started a long time ago with Thomas Putnam’s grandfather and Giles fighting over land. He says to Proctor with Putnam in the room, “...he nearly willed away my north pasture but he knew I’d break his fingers before he’d set his name to it” (32). This long-lasting resentment Giles clutches inside his heart builds the fire needed for him to accuse Thomas later, by saying to Judge Danforth: “If Jacobs hangs for a witch he forfeit up his property---that’s law! And there is none but Putnam with the coin to buy so great a piece.…

In 1692, the town of Salem in the Massachusetts saw the rise of paranoia to power and the degradation of social order the likes of which has never been seen in American History. An entire community of people swept up in a sudden outbreak of elaborate scheming, finger-pointing, and witchcraft that ended in tragedy. Was it down the fault of Puritanism, economic conspiracy within Salem, or a group of young girls too afraid of getting caught in a lie to reveal the truth? As anything in history, the events of the witch scare had multiple complex and intertwined causes that can hardly be separated for a single simple explanation. The root of this disaster in Salem’s history is directly linked to the Puritans’ relationship with god and the devil,…

Deviation from society was not tolerated in this community. Salem’s people only saw good and evil, black and white. A slight sign of individualism caused people to point their fingers and shout “witch”. A quote supporting this is when Danforth says “But you must understand, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it, there be no road in between (ACT III; page 87).” All of the beliefs and extremeness of the citizens’ religion caused them to become more fearful, and gullible towards the whole event.…

Since the beginning of time, humans have been generally selfish people. When put in dangerous situations, the human race tends to be selfish, as in that moment all that matters is surviving. There are many causes to the Salem witch trials and all of them stem from the church and the direct view of the bible. The way that Puritan society functioned repressed human nature and caused normally good people to lash out at others because of their own sin. They also gained both societal status and monetary value from accusing others. The literal view of the bible led to a very skewed version of the court. Along with this the fact that the Puritans were very isolated from the rest of society made for huge amounts of paranoia.…

Arthur Miller has shown Putnam to be a vindictive person, who believes himself wronged when he does not get his way (such as when the candidate he backed was not chosen for the Ministry). However, it is arguable that Putnam’s main motive is greed and not vengeance, for he is also shown to be a greedy man for land (Giles Corey accused him of asking his daughter to cry out George Jacobs for witchcraft in order to be able to buy his land, “The day his daughter cried out Jacobs, he said she’d given him a fair gift of…
