The novel Animal Farm written by George Orwell allegorically depicts the author’s views on the Russian Revolution.. The story takes place on a farm with many animals that are ruled by humans (Mr. Jones). Eventually the animals decide that they have had enough of not being treated fairly and revolt against Mr. Jones. Amongst the many themes written about by Orwell, the main themes in the novel that show how Orwell views the story are equality, greed and power. Throughout the novel Orwell shows the pigs want equality, the pigs get greedy and how the power gets to their heads.

“Comrades! He cried. You do not imagine, I hope, that we pigs are doing this in a spirit of selfishness and privilege? Many of us actually dislike milk and apples. Milk and apples (this has been proved by science, comrades) contain substances absolutely necessary to the well-being of a pig.” (page 35) Here it shows how Orwell views the theme of greed, the pigs became very greedy over time but they hid the fact very well from the animals. “Somehow it seemed as though the farm had grown richer without making the animals themselves any richer - except, of course, for the pigs and the dogs.” (page 123) Orwell explains how everything grew bigger and better around the animals apart from the actual animals, they never got any ‘richer’ so to say yet the pigs and dogs were sitting on gold bars. “Nobody stole, nobody grumbled about over his rations, the quarreling and biting and jealousy which had been normal features of life in the old days had almost disappeared.” (page 29) This further demonstrates Orwell’s thoughts towards how the animals were fooled by the pigs in thinking that everything was fair so they had stopped fighting.
