Socrates once said that “He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have.” This quote encapsulates the current state of the world, in which people are constantly wanting more than they have, which in reality will never satisfy them. Greed and materialism has been a social issue for many years, and will continue to be an issue in Australia, and the world. It is especially prominent in business professions, where greed is considered healthy and ambitious. Greed has been a plague on society, and can be argued as a main cause of other social issues like poverty, homelessness, and war. Corporate America is similar to Australia, and has many of the same practices, in their businesses.
The point of view being presented in this article, is that greed drives the business of corporate America, and is the main cause of the problems in corporate America. It is written by someone very critical of the way corporate America operates, and believes that greed is the main downfall of America. Although this article is against greed, it is presented with mostly facts, and history of corporate America, by doing this he persuades you subtly against greed and the business world. The journalist also talks about certain reforms, and how in an effort to help the industry, it created more greed, using the reward system. The reward system backfired as most companies abused it and used it their advantage and not to the company’s. This is an article, that was published at the height of scandals in the financial industry. It starts with a paragraph explaining the current state of corporate America, and it then goes into depth of how businesses used to operate, and what has caused these corporations to fail, and the cause of scandals. He uses rhyme at the end of each sentence, like ‘dice and paradise’ ‘compensate and fate’ and ‘consider and bidder’ He uses metaphors to convey meaning ‘the cards you were dealt’ and ‘there’s just one secret’ He repeats the sentence ‘how to be a millionaire’ commonly, to show he wants to be like the other rich people, because that’s what the world is coming to. The beginning of the song starts off with harsh sounds like rattling and cash registers, to set the tone of the song, it also does this towards the end of the song. He contrasts his world, with the world of the wealthy and the future itself. This song was highly popular when it was first released, largely due to the program ‘Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous’ this song probably had the effect of people wanting the same thing as it’s portraying. People want to be wealthy, and are materialistic, like the singer of this song. However, this song can double as a satire of our materialistic society. The music video does not have much relevance to the song, it just continues showing people wanting more and more. This song is a social commentary on our materialistic society, and consumerism, although it was released in 1985, it’s still highly relevant today.
