Greed And Corruption In Animal Farm By George Orwell

Animal Farm is a book by George Orwell based on the allegory of the Russian Revolution. In it, Orwell tells a story based on a group of animals seeking rebellion in order to pursue a life of liberty. It is a portrayal of the Russian Revolution, where the more cunning gained the false allegiance 0f the majority of the animals by playing on their dreams of a brighter future where all animals would live in dignity and peace. However, the corruption and greed overtakes the original leaders humble wish for a new life on the farm free of human authority. The story plays out similarly to the Russian Revolution where like the Russian people, the animals ended up in a worse system than that which they were trying to correct.

‘Do you know the enemy who has come in during the night and overthrown our windmill? SNOWBALL!’
Napoleon’s cowardice and greed shows itself when he says that Snowball is the culprit.

Greed and corruption is also shown through the disappearance of the milk (pg.25). The animals desired their faire share of the milk, but instead it was mixed every day into the pigs mash all because they were seen as more dominant than the other animals.

After Snowball’s expulsion, Napoleon announced the windmill was to be built. Squealer mentions the windmill is Napoleon’s own creation.
‘On the third Sunday after Snowball’s expulsion, the animals were somewhat surprised to hear Napoleon announce that the windmill was to be built after all. He did not give any reasons for having changed his mind, but merely warned the animals that this extra task would mean very hard work; it might even be necessary to reduce their rations’. (pg.42)

The animals sought out a rebellion in order to find liberty, but the irony was that things would turn out just as worse as before because of animals being under false allegiance, unachieved dreams and
